UW-Green Bay Log News, faculty, staff newsletter

Vol. 39, No. 50, January 2, 2008     /     Log Archive

Welcome back. Here's a short LOG newsletter to get the year off to a well-informed start. Incidentally, here's betting that this January you hear fewer people say, "I'm having trouble remembering '2008' when I write the date." For one thing, fewer folks write checks nowadays. Second... pundits, bloggers and everyday citizens have ensured a steady diet of hearing about 2008 since, roughly speaking, 2004. It's going to be one of those years. A couple of things today:

Last chance for Friends raffle, gift cards
UW-Green Bay security focus is in the news
Cold weather brings national exposure for Marker
Chancellor's office hour is Monday (with new location)
Newspaper assesses Green Bay's diversity-friendliness

Attention, Machiavelli fans
You'll need a ticket to 'Talk Sex with Sue'
First Channel 32 broadcast is Saturday
Columnist Still weighs in on New North
Soglin sings praises of libraries

Last chance for Friends raffle, fundraiser, chance at gift cards
Ticket sales end at 1 p.m. Thursday (Jan. 3) for the Friends of Cofrin Library raffle with $500, $300 and $100 gift cards up for grabs. (The cards are good for merchandise, apparel, etc., at the Phoenix Bookstore.) The raffle benefits the University Library; in previous years, proceeds have helped purchase reference works, music CDs and listening stations, display systems, computer chairs, popular magazines and books, microcard reader, digital camera and preservation supplies. To get your ticket(s) — $2 apiece or 6 for $10 — e-mail libfriends@uwgb.edu or call ext. 2539.

*******

You need not be present to win, but if you'd like to be, the drawing takes place Thursday (Jan. 3) at 2 p.m., in front of the Phoenix Bookstore on the library's plaza level.

UW-Green Bay focus on security is front-page news
In the Dec. 29 issue of the Green Bay Press-Gazette, reporter Kelly McBride describes results of the comprehensive, post-Virginia Tech security review on the UW-Green Bay campus. See "UWGB security review focuses on communication, student aid" (Read "aid" as "mental health services") at http://www.greenbaypressgazette.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20071229/GPG0101/712290578/1207.

Forbes' fascination with Ice Bowl calls on Marker
Prof. James Marker is getting national exposure these days on the physiology of cold-weather competition, what with recent observance of the 40th anniversary of the famous 1967 Ice Bowl (played in minus-13 weather), and upcoming Lambeau Field playoff game(s). Here's an example, from Forbes magazine: http://www.forbes.com/sportsbusiness/2007/12/14/nfl-packers-bears-biz-sports-cx_tvr_1214frozen.html.

Chancellor's office hour is Monday, but NOT at coffee shop
The online calendar for walk-in office hours for Chancellor Bruce Shepard lists the next session for Monday (Jan. 7), 1 to 2 p.m. PLEASE NOTE: The location is shifted, from the University Union to Cofrin Libary 830.

Journal-Sentinel assesses Green Bay's openness to diversity
... and finds a mixed bag, with much apparent progress and even some fans of the community's pro-diversity efforts, despite several highly publicized votes by city and county leaders that were seen by many as counterproductive. Prof. Marcelo Cruz, Alderperson Celestine Jeffreys, Amparo Baudhin, L.C. Green, Dan Nerad and former mayor Paul Jadin are among the many quoted in the lengthy and interesting page 1 piece at http://www.jsonline.com/story/index.aspx?id=702615.

Attention, Machiavelli fans: Move swiftly, decisively to attend this talk
Here's a reminder that Humanistic Studies kicks off its spring Great Books series next Tuesday (Jan. 8) with a talk at 6:30 p.m. at the Brown County Central Library. This month's presenter and discussion leader is Prof. Derek Jeffreys, and the topic is Machiavelli's The Prince.

You'll need a ticket to 'Talk Sex with Sue'
Tickets are now on sale for Sue Johanson, host of a popular Oxygen Network show, and her "Talk Sex with Sue Johanson" performance at 8 p.m. Wednesday, February 13 at the Weidner Center. She is a registered nurse, sex educator, counselor, writer and public speaker. Tickets are $10, on sale to the general public at the University Ticketing and Information Center. Co-sponsors are Campus Life, Good Times Programming Board, and the Residence Hall and Apartment Association. Click http://www.uwgb.edu/univcomm/news/archive/2007dec.htm#talk.

First Channel 32 broadcast is Saturday
The first of 10 Phoenix basketball games — both men's and women's — will be broadcast live from the Resch Center this Saturday night (Jan. 5) when the high-flying Phoenix men (7-5) take on defending Horizon League champion Wright State (8-3) at 7 p.m. Tune in to WACY-TV (MYNEW32). The first women's broadcast from the Kress will be next Thursday (Jan. 10) vs. Cleveland State.

*******

The Green Bay men host Detroit Mercy at 7:05 Thursday, Jan. 3 at the Resch Center, crosstown. The Phoenix will try to shake off a 93-75 loss Saturday at No. 7 Michigan State.

Columnist Still weighs in on New North, Milwaukee Seven, et al
Tom Still, a pretty astute observer of Wisconsin technology, education and economic development, wrote the following column after last month's New North summit. Regional cooperation is smart, he writes, but be careful of Balkanization: http://www.wisconsintechnologycouncil.com/newsroom/inside-wi/?Id=514.

Former Madison mayor sings praises of libraries
Need a reminder, and you probably don't, that public libraries are a neat thing? Check out a blog from Paul Soglin, one-time Madison mayor and all-time political talker, after a recent visit to Green Bay and its Brown County Central Library: http://www.waxingamerica.com/2007/12/thank-you-brown.html.
