UW-Green Bay Log News, faculty, staff newsletter

Vol. 39, No. 60, January 28, 2008     /     Log Archive

In time for the Lenten Season, there's a story making the rounds about college basketball's colorful Rick Majerus and his introduction last year as coach at St. Louis University, a Jesuit institution. Majerus followed the distinguished president, Father Lawrence Biondi, to the lectern and opened by sharing his own reflections on being Catholic. The virgin birth, the resurrection and ascension... all great mysteries of faith, Majerus conceded... but could anyone at his new school answer his biggest puzzler: "Did the Corinthians ever write back?" (Don't know if the Jesuits were amused, but their new coach certainly scored points - or lost points - for irreverence.) In real news today:

Faculty Development Conference rated 'A's from visitors
Participants in the 12th Annual Faculty Development Conference held at UW-Green Bay on Jan. 17 gave it high marks. The daylong event drew faculty from public and privates across the state. Among the evaluation comments:

— "The sessions that I attended gave me several ideas that I plan to use in my own classes this semester."

— "It was a great conference...Thanks for all your efforts putting the conference together — they clearly paid off."

— "It is always great to be reminded of what teaching really involves, and how each student comes to class with their own biases."

UW-Green Bay and the Instructional Development Council got a special thank-you from a UW System OPID rep who broadcast an e-mail statewide raving about the day. She called it "well organized, substantive, and thought-provoking," big enough to offer variety but small enough to be effective; with solid content for newcomers and veterans alike; and of value to faculty from any UW campus.

Unclassified staff will soon get e-mailed appointment letters
Employees with "unclassified staff" status at UW-Green Bay will be receiving e-mails tomorrow (Tuesday, Jan. 29) regarding the fact that annual appointment letters will now be distributed only electronically. The 2007-08 appointment letters will arrive via e-mail from the address HR@uwgb.edu. Hard copy letters will no longer be mailed. All salary adjustment(s) will be reflected in the electronic annual appointment letter. (Please note that employees receiving a new appointment effective July 1, 2007, or thereafter, already have received a contract letter with their initial appointment and therefore will not receive a letter at this time.

Pay raise details for unclassified staff
HR informs us that Feb. 1 paychecks for unclassified staff will reflect any salary adjustment(s) for 2007-08. In addition, recipients will get a lump sum payment and a separate earning statement on or near Feb. 12. For 12-month employees, this earning statement will reflect back pay for the salary increase between July 1, 2007 and December, 2007. For nine-month employees, this earning statement will reflect back pay for the salary increase between Aug. 27, 2007 and December 2007. Only mandatory deductions, such as federal and state income taxes and FICA, will be taken from this lump sum payment. (Please contact your supervisor or division head if you have questions regarding your salary.)

State considers limits on spending
Friday's Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported that, with tax collections likely to be much lower than projected, Gov. Doyle has asked state department heads to take the necessary actions to deal with the shortfall. See http://www.jsonline.com/story/index.aspx?id=711099.

'Ask GB' — an automated response to your questions
Already announced campuswide but repeated here for the record: Student Services is unveiling "Ask GB," a web-based resource that allows prospective students, current students and others to get answers to common questions. Buttons are located on primary student pages including Admissions, Advising and others. When you "Ask GB," the software invites the user to type in a complete question. For example, a user might ask "How do I apply for financial aid?" Users who do not get a satisfactory response will be directed to bypass the automated service to connect with a staff member.

Bauer-Dantoin to talk 'Politics and the HPV vaccine'
Student Life promises a lively discussion, "Politics and the HPV Vaccine," to be hosted and facilitated by Human Biology Prof. Angela Bauer-Dantoin. Scheduled to take place Thursday (Jan. 31) from 11 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. in the Union's 1965 Room, the discussion will address how a new vaccine that protects against cervical cancer has set up a clash between health advocates who want to use the shots aggressively and social conservatives who say immunizing teen-agers could encourage sexual activity. Questions? E-mail carters@uwgb.edu.

Could global warming unfreeze 'tundra' and Packers' secret weapon?
That would have been a better question had the Packers actually beaten the Giants in 'Ice Bowl II," but it's still a publicity-worthy approach. The activist group Wisconsin Environment is pushing the idea that Green Bay is at the top of the list of cold-weather sports towns that will be most affected by global warming. The group's field organizer, along with an aide to Congressman Kagen and UW-Green Bay Prof. Michael Kraft, will appear at a news conference 10 a.m. Wednesday (Jan. 30) at Titletown Brewing.

Habitat for Humanity's big spring starts with bowling, spaghetti and you
UW-Green Bay's Habitat for Humanity Club has three goals for spring semester: A) sponsor a local Habitat home ($10,000); B) support a Spring Break Collegiate Challenge trip for 16 students to Beaumont, Texas; C) and continue to inform campus and community about Habitat and homelessness. Two upcoming fundraisers:

• Bowl-a-thon, Tuesday (Jan. 29), 9-midnight, Ashwaubenon Lanes
Prizes, unlimited bowling, $7 per person with proceeds benefiting Texas trip

• Annual 'All You Can Eat' Spaghetti Dinner, Wednesday, Feb. 27, 5-6:30 p.m.
At the Ecumenical Center, $5 adults, $3 kids, raffle tickets, prizes, proceeds benefiting a local Habitat home.

Contact student coordinator Sarah Beckman (becksa27@uwgb.edu) if you have questions.
