Here are a couple of news items for Monday, July 1^*, at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay. * Please note: We have decided here to voluntarily alternate use of the number 4, replacing it occasionally with the little-used keyboard symbol ^ (known in some quarters as a “Rodgers”) as a good-faith sign of neutrality until the Great No. 4 Un-Retirement Crisis subsides.

Calendar reminder: Convocation set for Aug. 26
No need to rush the summer, but it’s time to start planning for UW-Green Bay’s annual Faculty and Staff Convocation. This year’s event is set for Tuesday, Aug. 26, starting at 9 a.m. in the Phoenix Room of the University Union. Convocation will include the introduction of new faculty and staff, announcement of recipients of the Founders Association Awards for Excellence and remarks by interim Chancellor David J. Ward. A faculty and staff breakfast in the Leona Cloud Commons will precede Convocation at 8 a.m.
Jessica Doyle here Tuesday to tout Covenant, visit Upward Bound
Wisconsin First Lady Jessica Doyle will be on the UW-Green Bay campus Tuesday (July 15) to visit with students in the Upward Bound program. Doyle will share a pro-higher education message and promote the Wisconsin Covenant, which guarantees students a spot in a UW System school, a Wisconsin technical college or one of the state’s 20 private colleges or universities if they graduate high school with at least a “B” average. Doyle will be in Mary Ann Cofrin Hall Room 208 from 11:30 a.m. until noon. Afterward, she will visit St. Norbert College in De Pere to talk with more Upward Bound students.
UW-Green Bay’s program serves East, West, Preble
UW-Green Bay’s Upward Bound program educates low-income and potential first-generation college students (kids whose parents never graduated from a college) from Green Bay East, Green Bay West and Green Bay Preble high schools. The program is designed to make students academically prepared to continue in higher education by teaching core subjects and several electives throughout the summer.
Snapshots and a movie: Summer Art Studio
A butterfly sculpture for the city and a photo gallery full of fun art are evidence of the great success of the annual UW-Green Bay Summer Art Studio for young artists, last month on campus. See the gallery and a video, at http://wwwtest.uwgb.edu/univcomm/news/page/photo.htm.
‘Ruling blows hole in state budget’
That was the headline over a story Friday on a state Supreme Court ruling in a contested tax case that could cost state government $265 million in refunds and interest it doesn't have. See http://www.jsonline.com/watch/?watch=1&date=7/11/2008&id=43006.
Newspaper alleges chancellor choice Fellner had trouble with grants
The state’s largest newspaper, the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, sent a reporter to delve into the federal investigation that appears to have cost Robert Fellner his appointment as the new chancellor at UW-Parkside. Interesting reading at http://www.jsonline.com/story/index.aspx?id=771729.
State pays $250,000 to end sex harassment case
UW-Madison will pay $250,000 to settle a lawsuit brought by a former power plant employee who claimed she faced rampant discrimination and sexual harassment. See http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/chi-ap-wi-uw-sexualharassme,0,6150316.story.
