The Journal-Sentinel reported Friday that a 57-year-old Milwaukee man was charged with blasting his hard-to-start lawnmower with a sawed-off shotgun. The man is facing a misdemeanor disorderly conduct charge, one felony count of possessing a short-barreled shotgun, and the cold reality that his rage against the machine ensures the pellet-mangled mower will never run again. Commented the owner of one repair shop, dryly, "Anything not factory-recommended would void the warranty.” Police say alcohol was a factor; it’s also possible the guy consulted the owner’s manual and misunderstood the term “trouble shooting.” In real news today:
• Q&A: David Ward
• Retirement gathering for Mike Barry is Aug. 22

Q&A: Ward shares thoughts on interim status, Quonset-hut roots, and $140 oil
In case you missed the Sunday (July 27) edition of the Green Bay Press-Gazette, the paper ran a lively interview with Green Bay native, one-time student and former UW-Green Bay faculty member David Ward, now the interim chancellor. It’s all online at

Reminder: ‘UW-Green Bay to hold forums on chancellor search’
That was the headline over a story in today’s P-G describing the sessions that will take place this Wednesday (July 30) at UW-Green Bay and provide campus and community an opportunity to weigh in on qualities they’d like to see in the school’s new chancellor.

NYT story looks at greening of college images
Green is good for the planet, but also for a college’s public image. In a Princeton Review survey this year of 10,300 college applicants, 63 percent said that a college’s commitment to the environment could affect their decision to go there. Klatt becomes women’s tennis coach for Phoenix
Green Bay Director of Athletics Ken Bothof announced today the hiring of Craig Klatt as the department's head coach for women's tennis.
