UW-Green Bay Log News, faculty, staff newsletter

Vol. 39, No. 136, July 3, 2008     /     Log Archive

Sorry for the long lag between newsletters. For a while there, we were getting tired of the grind. Weren't sure we wanted to come back. At 39 (serving UW-Green Bay since 1969!) a publication begins to wear down... the phrasing starts to go, the analogies aren't as nimble, you can't complete the deep passages like before... but, somehow, we still have that itch to toss our receivers a few messages. Here goes:

News reports: UW System lapse is $25 million
IDC awards for Caglar, Entwistle, Voelker
Ganyard, Web Services are now in CL 730
Alumni Golf snapshots
'Sound Tracker' makes noise on ABC
Editorial calls for better hiring
Independent consultant to review UW-Parkside process

News reports: UW System share of '09 lapse is $25 million
The UW System is being asked to make $25 million in spending cuts to help the state cover its Fiscal Year '09 shortfall. That news came Thursday (July 3) in Madison as state budget officials announced how $270 million in reductions — ordered by Gov. Jim Doyle because of the economic slowdown — would be apportioned across all state agencies. UW-Green Bay will await direction from UW System on a final plan. Earlier this year, then-Chancellor Bruce Shepard expressed disappointment in the budget action but confidence that the University had anticipated the lapse to best manage impact on current operations and instruction. For Thursday's news coverage, http://www.madison.com/wsj/mad/breaking_news/294595.

Summer 2008 IDC awards for Caglar, Entwistle, Voelker
An alert LOG reader points out that in a recent issue where we named the spring grant recipients, we might have also announced the summer honorees. Here goes: Three faculty members have received Instructional Development grants awarded by the University's Instructional Development Council. The grants are for $3,500 each. Recipients of the Summer 2008 awards were faculty members Atife Caglar, Jeff Entwistle, and David Voelker.

Paula Ganyard, Web Services are now on 7th floor
The Web Services office has moved from IS1144 to CL 730. Paula Ganyard's phone number is still the same at ext. 2951, but inter-campus mail should now be addressed to CL 730. In addition, the office name has changed from Web Development to Web Services.

Alumni Golf Outing: snapshots
Maybe you'll recognize some of the alumni and friends at last month's big outing. The lowest-scoring golfers were alumni Aaron Richardson '00, James Sarow '99, and Chris Domino '98. The most photogenic golfers? See for yourself at http://www.uwgb.edu/alumni/photogallery/receptions/080613golf/.

'Sound Tracker' makes noise on ABC's Nightline program
In case you missed it, alumnus Gordon Hempton (Population Dynamics, Class of 1976) enjoyed some national exposure on the ABC News program 'Nightline' on June 24. The "acoustic ecologist" known as "The Sound Tracker" earned publicity for his public awareness and lobbying campaign to preserve wilderness areas from noise pollution. Sorry, we couldn't find a link to the ABC clip. Hempton is, however, featured on campus as one of our 25 notable grads at http://www.uwgb.edu/25000/featured/.

Editorial calls for better system of hiring chancellors
"The botched hiring of a new chancellor at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside has legislative opponents of the UW System absolutely drooling with delight..." That's the first line of a La Crosse Tribune editorial at http://www.lacrossetribune.com/articles/2008/07/03/opinion/editorial/edit0703.txt.

Independent consultant to review UW-Parkside process
The UW System will hire an independent consultant to review the search-and-screen process used to choose the top chancellor candidate at UW-Parkside. Insiders say insufficient reference checks and a compressed timeline may have hampered the process. See the Journal Sentinel at http://www.jsonline.com/story/index.aspx?id=768219.

To Top of Page.
