If you believe in weather predictions that go further than a day or two out, then we should be done with significant rainfalls for at least a while. Weather.com predicts only a 50 percent chance of rain Saturday night and a 40 percent chance of scattered storms in the area on Sunday. Next week looks warm and dry. In case we do get more rain, this LOG is probably too short to print out and provide the same kind of precipitation protection that newspapers offer. But enjoy it anyway, in all its brevity.

Phuture Phoenix scholarship funds growing
Three major donations to the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay's Phuture Phoenix program were announced Wednesday (June 11) at a parting reception hosted by outgoing Chancellor Bruce Shepard and his wife Cyndie. Local philanthropist Irene 'Billie' Daniell Kress has made the first leadership gift to a $5 million scholarship fund earmarked for the Phuture Phoenix program. The Kress gift will kick-start an ongoing endowment fund for the program that helps Northeast Wisconsin's youth pursue a post-secondary education. A group of local families also started an endowment in Cyndie's name, and the Shepards themselves announced they created an endowment for the Phuture Phoenix program. http://www.uwgb.edu/univcomm/news/archive/2008/08-149.htm

Chancellor search officially begins
The 21-member search and screen committee met for the first time Wednesday to begin its quest to find UW-Green Bay's fifth chancellor. UW System President Kevin P. Reilly charged the committee with the task and informed the members about search instructions and expectations. The committee, chaired by Prof. Denise Scheberle, will meet again on Friday, June 27. http://www.uwgb.edu/univcomm/news/archive/2008/08-148.htm
Professor pay is worth exploring
An editorial in the Green Bay Press-Gazette Thursday says the gap between professor pay at UW System universities and comparable "peer institutions" in other states is widening. The column says the issue of examining professor pay to make the UW System more competitive is worth exploring. "...students who are now paying the greater portion of the (tuition) bill have the right to expect their money is going to hire and compensate the best possible teachers," the column says. http://www.greenbaypressgazette.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=2008806120639
"Good news" UW-Green Bay
UW System President Kevin P. Reilly noted two "good news" items pertaining to UW-Green Bay in a memo to System officials and leaders. They didn't have the glitz and glamour of UW-Oshkosh students working on the Johnny Depp film "Public Enemies," but Reilly pointed to UW-Green Bay's 25,000th graduate and the Kress Events Center hosting commencement this spring. "For UW-Green Bay, this year's ceremony held particular significance. On May 17th, UW-Green Bay celebrated Graduate No. 25,000. Special guest Nancy Deprey, who was UW-Green Bay's very first graduate, was on hand to celebrate the occasion." On the commencement ceremony at the Kress Events Center, "The commencement truly was a celebration of the rich history of progress and accomplishments at UW-Green Bay, while looking forward to an exciting future."
Cameras focused on FOCUS
The cameras were focused on the FOCUS R&R sessions held the last two weeks on campus. Look online at some pictures of some of our incoming freshmen and the fun they had at the FOCUS days. Brenda Amenson-Hill, assistant dean for Campus Life, said the FOCUS program has worked with more than 1,000 new students and their parents. "This has been a great experience for the many staff, faculty and students who were working with the new students," she said. http://www.uwgb.edu/focus/
Graduations galore at Kress Events Center
The Kress Events Center was a busy place earlier this month, hosting three high school graduations shortly after UW-Green Bay's Class of 2008 walked across the stage. Graduates from Green Bay East, Green Bay West and Green Bay Southwest high schools all received their diplomas on the floor of the Kress Events Center. Check out the Green Bay Press-Gazette's photo pages of the graduations (and of the UW-Green Bay commencement) at: http://www.greenbaypressgazette.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080610/GPG0101/306100037/1206/GPG01.
Campus spared the brunt of recent rains
UW-Green Bay was mostly spared from the recent rainstorms that left much of the Midwest flooded and still soaking wet. There was no major building damage to report and only several typical small window and roof leaks, Director of Facilities Management and Planning Chris Hatfield reported. There were, however, seven trees knocked over on campus by Thursday night's storms, including three of them on Shorewood Golf Course. They caused no major damage. Many branches were also felled during the storm, which caused widespread flooding in Oshkosh, Fond du Lac and elsewhere. http://www.greenbaypressgazette.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080613/GPG0101/306130013/1206/GPG01
