Story spotlights endangered languages, Abbott's work with Oneida
UW-Green Bay linguist Cliff Abbott, who has spent much of his professional life studying the Oneida language, says after learning its grammar as a Yale grad student, it was nonetheless "kind of a shock when I finally got out here and realized that people spoke it very effortlessly... I didn't understand how it could all fit in somebody's mind." A Lee Newspapers story mentions Abbott's work with 97-year-old tribal elder Maria Hinton, a UW-Green Bay grad, and also addresses other endangered American Indian languages in Wisconsin.
