Two new arts majors coming to UW-Green Bay
The Board of Regents for the University of Wisconsin System Friday approved adding two new majors at UW-Green Bay. "Design Arts" and "Arts Management" majors will be added to the 2008-09 curriculum as interdisciplinary Bachelor of Arts degrees. "Both programs had been areas of emphasis, but never full-fledged majors," said Associate Provost of Academic Affairs Tim Sewall. "There has been, for the past few years now, a critical mass of students who have signed up for those areas of emphasis. We did an analysis and determined there is a need for majors in both areas." The Design Arts major develops intellectual, esthetic and problem-solving skills in graphic and environmental design in a liberal arts setting. An Arts Management degree provides the skills necessary to manage not-for-profit arts and cultural organizations. http://www.uwgb.edu/univcomm/news/archive/2008/08-146.htm
Six faculty promotions approved
The Regents also had before them the promotions of six UW-Green Bay faculty members. Promoted to full professor from associate professor was Regan A. R. Gurung, Human Development. Gurung joined the UW-Green Bay faculty in 1999. He currently chairs the Human Development unit. Five faculty members were promoted from assistant professor to associate professor with tenure. They include Scott Ashmann, Education; Denise Bartell, Human Development; Stefan Hall, Humanistic Studies; Mark Kiehn, Education; and Kristin Vespia, Human Development. Bartell and Vespia became UW-Green Bay faculty members in 2002. Ashmann and Hall joined the faculty in 2003 and Kiehn in 2004. http://www.uwgb.edu/univcomm/news/archive/2008/08-147.htm
Shepard offers 'A look back, and forward'
The Green Bay Press-Gazette editorial board last week invited Chancellor Bruce Shepard to "reflect on the seven years he has spent at the helm at UWGB and offer observations about the University, the state and the community." Shepard touched on tuition, faculty retention, the Growth Agenda, regional goals and more. On his greatest success, "The one accomplishment I feel most proud of was to get the campus and the community back together," Shepard said. "I've been preaching a very simple vision, that it's not the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, it's Green Bay's University of Wisconsin. You can't just say that; you have to earn that sense of ownership. People just naturally want something they own to be good, so that turned out to be a much easier sell than I thought it would be." http://www.greenbaypressgazette.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080608/GPG0602/806080700/1269/GPG06
Chancellor wants better faculty compensation
Shepard also told the editorial board that the UW System's ability to attract and retain good faculty is a major concern. Faculty salaries have further fallen behind peer institutions, Shepard said. "It's as though the Green Bay Packers — that's another talent business — said, 'We're going to keep a cap on our salaries that's 20 percent below the league's salary cap.' Well, they're not going to be competing for league titles for very long; they may last a period of years, but eventually they'll pay the price. So that's a frustration for chancellors."
Panel will advise UW System on faculty pay
UW System President Kevin Reilly told the Board of Regents Friday that a new, statewide commission would advise System officials on how to make faculty and staff pay more competitive to retain top talent, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. Reilly announced the move during his report on the UW System's request for funds in the 2009-11 state budget process, according to the paper. "We're struggling all the time to remain dynamic in a very competitive national market for talent," he was quoted as saying. The commission will include students, faculty, regents and business leaders. It will likely start making recommendations in 2009. UW-Milwaukee to get new schools
The Board of Regents Friday also approved two new schools at the UW-Milwaukee campus. If the state Legislature approves the move, UW-Milwaukee students can enroll in the graduate-level schools of public health and freshwater sciences as early as fall 2009. The School of Freshwater Sciences would be the first of its kind in the country. The School of Public Health would offer four Ph.D. programs in epidemiology, environmental and occupational health, health administration and policy, and social science and community health. http://www.jsonline.com/story/index.aspx?id=759473
Regents approve three new chancellors
The Board of Regents formally appointed three new chancellors at UW System universities Friday. Carolyn A. 'Biddy' Martin was appointed as chancellor of UW-Madison, effective Sept. 1, with an annual salary of $437,000. About a quarter of her salary will be underwritten with private financial resources. Robert Felner is the new chancellor of UW-Parkside, effective Aug. 1, at an annual salary of $205,000. Richard J. Telfer removed the 'interim' from his title and officially became chancellor of UW-Whitewater after the Regents' approval. Telfer will make $199,500. http://www.wisconsin.edu/news/2008/r080605.htm
