UW-Green Bay Log News, faculty, staff newsletter

Vol. 39, No. 81, March 10, 2008     /     Log Archive

At least one UW-Eau Claire alumnus on this campus has requested a correction for a recent LOG item that used the spelling "Bluegolds" for his alma mater's sports nickname. Our response is to note that while "Blugold" without an "e" is indeed the school-sanctioned spelling, our orthographically challenged friends don't seem to appreciate the larger issue. Clearly clu-less, they are overdu to pursu tutoring that would help them accru the secrets of tru spelling. You wanted a correction, Blu(e)gold backer? Consider yourself corrected. Talk on eating 'sustainably' will launch new Center for Food at UW-Green Bay
A free public lecture and reception later this month will formally mark the opening of UW-Green Bay's new research institute, the Center for Food in Community and Culture. Guest speaker Jack Kloppenburg, a rural sociologist at UW-Madison, will speak on "Resolving the Omnivore's Dilemma: Eating Pleasurably and Sustainably in the 21st Century." He'll talk from 5 to 6 p.m. Thursday, March 27, in MAC Hall Room 2008, immediately followed by a reception in the Wintergarden atrium. Kloppenburg says the rise of large agribusiness, the decline of some rural communities and small-family farming, changes in soil and water quality, and even some health problems are all intertwined with what we choose to eat. He will address some of the grass-roots ways in which sustainable agricultural practices can be encouraged.

Center sprouts from Walter's named professorship
The Center for Food in Community and Culture was founded by Lynn Walter, professor of Social Change and Development. Walter is using proceeds from her appointment as the University's Ben J. and Joyce Rosenberg Professor to advance research on issues related to food, food insecurity and political, social and economic influences. Reflecting the interdisciplinary nature of the Center, the March 27 event (previous item) is being promoted by Associate Prof. Debra Person of Human Biology and nutrition.

UW System clarifies discussion on tuition and financial aid
When national talk radio got hold of a small part of Thursday's Board of Regents discussion of tuition, some conservatives portrayed it as primarily a Robin Hood plan to soak the rich to make the UW System more affordable for the poor. UW System President Kevin Reilly has since sought to clarify with his own summary, and he invites those interested in the issues to actually listen to the recording of the Board's discussion. See http://www.wisconsin.edu/news/2008/r080307.htm.

Journal Sentinel quotes Shepard in coverage of tuition discussion
The Board of Regents' discussion last Thursday drew significant in-state coverage, too. Differential tuition — from campus to campus and program to program — was among the hypotheticals discussed. Milwaukee Journal Sentinel coverage quotes UW-Green Bay Chancellor Bruce Shepard, at http://www.jsonline.com/story/index.aspx?id=725632.

Look for more info Tuesday on Governor's budget plan
Details are emerging about Governor Doyle's budget adjustment bill. Early coverage Monday evening is focused on the revenue side, but spending-side measures, if any, have not yet been released. If lapses for the biennium's second year are to come — and Doyle has said previously that protecting the UW System is a priority, if possible — UW officials say they are hopeful of working with the Governor and legislators to sustain the positive momentum for the widely supported Growth Agenda for Wisconsin. Early J-S coverage was at http://www.jsonline.com/watch/?watch=1&date=3/10/2008&id=36780.

Among many Favre tributes, one from a UW-Green Bay student
In case you didn't notice in the deluge of Brett Favre retirement coverage, here's a heart-warming story from last Friday's Press-Gazette. Nikki Stuettgen, now a UW-Green Bay student, was hospitalized at age 16 with a rare form of spinal cancer. Favre's foundation and the QB himself played a role in her recovery. Stuettgen recalls that Favre — having experienced tragedy and cancer in his own family — met with her and convinced her that asking "Why me?" never does any good. Matt Bollant shares coach of the year honors with Wright State's Bridgett Williams. Guard Kayla Groh and center Lavesa Glover are second-team selections. Civic Symphony, visiting scholar Krak score with premiere
The Green Bay Civic Symphony Orchestra "was at its best" Saturday for the world premiere of "Hymnus: Iam lucis orto sidere (Morning Hymn)" and "Hymnus: Te lucis ante terminum (Evening Hymn)" by Slovakian composer Egon Krak, whose International Visiting Scholars residency is co-sponsored by UW-Green Bay. Krak earned a ceremonial key to the city from Mayor Jim Schmitt and, afterward, a glowing review from newspaper columnist Warren Gerds.
