UW-Green Bay Log News, faculty, staff newsletter

Vol. 39, No. 83, March 17, 2008     /     Log Archive

Faith and begorra! Can't remember if it was the character actor Barry Fitzgerald or the Lucky Charms leprechaun or Sinead O'Connor who first etched that phrase on the ol' hippocampus, but it's March 17 again and it just had to get out. "Begorra," incidentally, is a mild Irish oath that supposedly translates as "by gosh" or "by God." Try it some time; it's kind of fun. Here now, the news, begorra:

Vision for proposed institute
Corn-to-energy grant
Meyer on WPT to talk social networking sites
Women's fans hope for NCAA bid
If not, WNIT starts Wednesday

Reminder: 'Your Mamma, Your Grandma and Women's History'
Brew U
Seeds of a great new industry
More LOG on Tuesday

Vision/mission for proposed institute is at 'Growing Academic Excellence' blog
As first mentioned in the Log on Thursday, a new blog, "Growing Academic Excellence-Sustainability," is giving the campus community an opportunity to join the discussion of a new initiative to grow excellence in the environmental sciences, policy and business. In response to a challenge from Chancellor Bruce Shepard, senior and retired faculty began this conversation in January and have drafted a vision/mission statement for what they're calling the Institute for Environmental Management and Business. To review the vision/mission statement and provide commentary, click https://blog.uwgb.edu/excellence/. To comment on a blog post, click on the headline of that particular post. Then scroll down and leave a comment in the reply box below the post.

Corn-to-energy grant has Katers, Zorn testing recycling strategies
Waste from vegetable processing may be turned into energy and possibly eventually into other useful products as a result of a study funded by a $29,885 grant from the Midwest Food Processors Association, Inc. to UW-Green Bay Prof. John F. Katers. The study for Del Monte Foods will evaluate options for solid waste and wastewater generated at vegetable processing facilities in Wisconsin. The study will take place in labs at UW-Green Bay and involve an anaerobic digester. Katers, an engineer, has received several previous grants for projects converting dairy farm waste into energy. He'll be joined by chemist, Prof. Michael Zorn, on the new study. For details, http://www.uwgb.edu/univcomm/news/archive/2008/08-61.htm.

Prof. Meyer will discuss social networking sites on 'Teen Connection'
UW-Green Bay Prof. Tim Meyer will help lead the live discussion among teen panelists when the Wisconsin Public Television show "Teen Connections" tackles issues related to Internet social-networking sites at 7 p.m. Tuesday (March 18). Excerpts from interviews with Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen and Howard Schweber, associate professor of political science at UW-Madison, will be featured. "Teen Connection" is co-produced by NEWIST/CESA 7 and Educational TV Productions of Northeastern Wisconsin from studios on the UW-Green Bay campus. The local TV outlet for the broadcast is WPNE Channel 38.

You never know: Women's fans will watch ESPN selection show for news
The 64-field team for the NCAA Women's Basketball Tournament will be revealed at 6 p.m. Monday (March 17) on ESPN. The Phoenix women, with a sensational 26-5 record but a slightly lower computer ranking, are a long shot for an at-large bid. UW-Green Bay lost its chance for the Horizon League's automatic berth with an emphatic 90-66 home loss to Cleveland State in last Friday's semifinals. ESPN's "bracketology" columnist predicted Green Bay will miss the field (barely) when the NCAA selection committee makes its announcement. Look for "last four out" at http://sports.espn.go.com/ncw/bracketology.

WNIT starts Wednesday
If the answer is "no" from the NCAA, the Phoenix women are assured a "yes" from the Women's National Invitation Tournament, which will begin Wednesday with a first round that will pair 48 teams in games at 24 campus sites. Green Bay Athletics will have news as soon as it's available (presumably, not long after Monday evening's NCAA announcement) at http://uwgbathletics.cstv.com/.

Reminder: 'Your Mamma, Your Grandma and Women's History'
Prof. Kim Nielsen talks on the topic "Your Mamma, Your Grandma and Women's History" as part of the Third Thursdays downtown lecture series this Thursday (March 20). Her presentation celebrates Women's History Month. Space is still available for this free program, but pre-registration is appreciated. Online registration and complete program details are at http://www.uwgb.edu/downtown/.

Brew U: Platteville's may be only commercial brewery in nation
The Wisconsin State Journal describes how the UW-Platteville brewery brews about 10 barrels a year; the beer is only available at the school's Pioneer Student Center. See http://www.madison.com/wsj/home/biz/277205.

'Seeds of a great new industry taking root'
That's the headline over a column by Tom Still, president of the Wisconsin Technology Council, talking about the emergence of stem-cell technologies leading to a new arena of Wisconsin commerce. See http://www.jsonline.com/story/index.aspx?id=728371.
