Vol.
39, No. 84, March 18, 2008 / Log
Archive
Here's a special bonus edition of the LOG newsletter where we, too, are jittery over the Bear Stearns meltdown, only slightly reassured by the J.P. Morgan takeover, cautious following the three-quarters-of-a-point Federal Reserve rate cut and, actually, pretty happy about last night's discovery of a loose $10 bill that went through the wash but came out okay. In non-financial news today:
• Omega-3, and a campus cooking demonstration
• Attention, faculty and teaching staff: HERI is calling
• Women's NIT game is Saturday in Iowa
• It's 11th straight post-season
• Fan bus to Des Moines a possibility
• Professional development speaker is April 2; RSVP ASAP
• Guam? The Virgin Islands? Exchange students are smart
• Fire Department inspection
• Thoughts of Brazil
• Coach Kline promotes fundraising run
• Founding faculty member Randall dies at age 84
• 'Your Mama' talk on Thursday
• Another editorial on Regents' tuition discussion
• Coach K's camps offer discounts for faculty/staff families
• Egg roll sale
• Clampitt, Furlong headline 'all-star' roster
• Phoenix divers compete at NCAA regionals
• Briefs: Haynie, Gurung, Howe
Food for thought: A campus cooking demonstration on omega-3
Eat fats for your health? Only if the fats are omega-3. Learn why they're important and how to get them in your diet when the Nutritional Sciences academic program hosts a Healthy Cooking and Tasting Demonstration, from 1 to 2 p.m. Thursday, April 3, in Laboratory Sciences Room 421. Says Prof. Debra Pearson, "We will be making and sampling a number of delicious, low cost recipes with fish, nuts and dark green leafy vegetables, all great sources of omega-3 oils." Space is limited. Register and pay Marie Stephenson, LS 455 (stephenm@uwgb.edu) by the end of the day Monday, March 31. Cost is $5 for faculty and staff, $3 for students.
Attention, faculty and teaching staff: HERI needs to hear from you
Over the past six weeks, Debbie Furlong has coordinated UW-Green Bay's participation in the Faculty Survey, a national project conducted every three years by UCLA's Higher Education Research Institute (HERI). The survey includes questions about workload, productivity, climate, and work-related stress that are particularly important to our University right now. The Higher Learning Commission, following its recent institutional review, has asked us to assess and report on the impact of the Growth Agenda on these important factors. Benchmarking faculty experiences against national norms will be especially critical as we implement the first phase of the Growth Agenda next year. Full-time instructional staff (including both faculty and lecturers) have received three e-mail invitations to participate in the project. HERI informs us that at this time only 40% of faculty have completed the survey (n=72). The survey protocol includes one last e-mail invitation, which was mailed Friday, March 14. The data collection site will remain open until May 30, 2008. Please, if you have not already done so, consider taking the time to complete the survey.
Women's team earns NIT bid; will play Saturday in Iowa
The UW-Green Bay women's basketball team (26-5) has earned a bid to play in the 48-team Women's National Invitation Tournament. The Phoenix will play at Drake University (22-10) in the first round on Saturday (March 22) in Des Moines. Tipoff time will be confirmed later. With a win, the Phoenix would advance to face the University of Illinois Monday, March 24 in Champaign. See http://uwgbathletics.cstv.com/sports/w-baskbl/spec-rel/031808aab.html.
It's 11th straight post-season appearance for Phoenix women
Hats off to the UW-Green Bay women's basketball team. Though disappointed at not being extended an at-large bid to this year's NCAA Tournament, the program celebrates this year's berth in the WNIT as the 11th straight season of postseason play (with eight NCAA bids and three WNITs).
Fan bus to Des Moines a possibility
The Fast Break Club is considering a plan to take a fan bus to the WNIT game at Drake this Saturday (March 22). They need to know if there is enough interest from the fans in order to book it. Game time is likely to be 4 p.m., in which case departure would need to be 7 a.m. Saturday from the Kress Events Center. Returning time of either immediately following the game or staying over will depend upon the fans' preference. Please contact Becci Vander Plas at (920) 497-0151 or e-mail bvandenplas@new.rr.com by Thursday, March 20, to hold a reservation. Costs and details will be determined based on the number of fans interested (estimated around $40 per person plus ticket at $4 for student or $7 general admission).
Professional development speaker is April 2; please RSVP ASAP
The Classified Staff Advisory Council and the Academic Staff will welcome Jay Gubrud to campus for a presentation 9 a.m. to noon, Wednesday, April 2 in the Phoenix Room.
His topics:
Find out the power of perception

Find out the 4 steps to healthy conflict
Please RSVP to Elaina Koltz @ koltze@uwgb.edu by Thursday, March 20. The event is open to all Classified Staff/Academic Staff/Faculty. Refreshments will be served.

Founding faculty member Randall dies at age 84
Services were held on Monday (March 17) for Sterling P. "Bud" Randall Jr., who joined the science faculty in 1968, the University's first year as a four-year institution. He died on Thursday, March 13 in Green Bay at the age of 84. Randall, whose area was physical and inorganic chemistry, served as chairperson of the chemistry discipline in the mid-1970s. A Green Bay native, he graduated from St. Norbert College and earned master's and Ph.D. degrees at UW-Madison. He came to UW-Green Bay after teaching stints with UW Extension in Milwaukee and at UW-Marathon County. He retired in spring of 1983. Prof. Randall was married to Prof. Donna Randall, also a member of the University's founding science faculty. She died in 1994.
Downtown Lunch Series talk on 'Your Mama' is noon Thursday
UW-Green Bay Prof. Kim Nielsen, speaker at the next Downtown Third Thursdays lecture series event at noon Thursday (March 20) in Suite 110 of the Baylake Bank City Center, 301 N. Another editorial questioning Regents' tuition discussion
This recent editorial from the Sheboygan Press newspaper doesn't break much new ground, but it is fairly representative of the generally skeptical reaction to the recent UW Regent discussion of charging higher tuition to generate more financial aid. See "Shelve well-meaning, but flawed proposal for UW tuition" at http://www.sheboygan-press.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080314/SHE06/803140547/1109/SHEopinion.

Day camp and overnight camp options are both available. Children of UW-Green Bay faculty/staff will receive $40 discounts off tuition costs. Clampitt, Furlong highlight UW-Green Bay 'all-star' roster
We see they are advertising tickets for the basketball game, at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 5, at the Kress Center. The contest features a UW-Green Bay all-star team — the roster includes Phil Clampitt and Scott Furlong — vs. some Green Bay Packers players. Witnesses to this will be asked to pay $5 (general public), $3 (children 12 and under) and $2 (UW-Green Bay students). Tickets are now on sale at the Union ticket office.
Phoenix divers compete at NCAA regionals
The Green Bay women's swimming and diving team sent a pair of divers to the NCAA regionals in Columbus, Ohio, this past weekend. Kari Helland, a senior, placed 33rd among 41 women on the high board, and 34th on the 1-meter board. Lauren McGraw also competed.
