Van Remortel earns top honor from municipal clerks association
Kassie Van Remortel, director of government affairs and economic development for UW-Green Bay's Office of Outreach and Extension, has won the 2008 Institute Directors Award of Excellence from the International Institute of Municipal Clerks. She'll be honored at the 2008 IIMC Annual Conference in Atlanta in mid-May. The award recognizes both Van Remortel's service and the excellence of UW-Green Bay's annual Municipal Clerks and Treasurers Institute, a summer training program for government officials now in its 30th year. For more on the program and award, and quotes from Van Remortel and others, http://www.uwgb.edu/univcomm/news/archive/2008/08-65.htm.

'Tear down that wall!' University Union project keeps moving forward
It wasn't exactly identical to President Reagan's Berlin Wall speech, but campus officials did encourage Miron Construction to tear down the plastic walls in the University Union while students were away on spring break. Miron concurred... and the Cloud Commons is now open and viewable to the new addition to the south, and the Marketplace expansion can be seen with continuing work to create the Ultimate Baja (Mexican) and Freshetta (pizza) operations. With Spring's official arrival, the sun and natural light from new outer rooms of the Union are finding their way into the Cloud. For the main portion of the project, completion is expected on or about May 1 with occupancy to follow during May and the summer for the UW Credit Union, Phoenix Bookstore, University Ticketing, Information and ID Services. The expanded dining room seating and lounge areas will be furnished and made available for the campus community early in May. "Come on over and take a peak!"

Hate the Drake... beat the Drake
The Phoenix women's basketball team (26-5) plays the school with the Seinfeldian catch-phase name — Love the Drake? Hate the Drake — at precisely 4:07 p.m. Saturday (March 22) at the Knapp Center in Des Moines, Iowa. It's the first round of the Women's National Invitation Tournament. A Press-Gazette preview earlier this week described UW-Green Bay's path to the WNIT and near-miss of an NCAA bid: http://www.greenbaypressgazette.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080318/GPG020101/803180588/1229/GPGsports.

No fan bus to Iowa... but radio
The Fast Break Club will not be organizing a fan bus to the WNIT game at Drake this Saturday (March 22). The game will, however, be carried live by WDUZ The Fan at AM 1400 or FM 107.5.

Photo: UW-Green Bay Recruitment Partner of the Year Award to Schenck
Schenck Business Solutions was the recipient of the 2008 Recruitment Partner of the Year Award as presented by UW-Green Bay Career Services at a campus event last month. The award recognizes employers who promote internships and post-graduate employment opportunities. Schenck is a full-service CPA and business consulting firm with more than 500 employees, and nine locations throughout Wisconsin. The award was presented by Steve Swan and acknowledged by Schenck President Bill Goodman and Dennis Langenberg, managing partner of the Green Bay office. The award was first given in 2007, to WPS Resources Corp. For photos and more, http://www.uwgb.edu/univcomm/news/archive/2008/08-43.htm.

New (old) face joins staff of the University Union
The University Union invites us to please welcome Wayne Walker '98 as he begins his employment as the customer service manager for University Ticketing, Information, and ID Services in the University Union. Wayne joins UW-Green Bay staff after a five-year stint as customer service manager for WG&R. He was a standout for the Phoenix basketball team in the late 1990s. He will manage the front-of-house operations for the new ticketing, info and ID facility being created with the new Union addition.

Wildly popular, Spanish Immersion for Professionals returns to Door
The UW-Green Bay Spanish Immersion for Professionals program Monday through Friday, Aug. 11-15, promises an intensive language-learning experience in a resort setting for those in such fields as customer service, call centers, hospitality, banking, teaching and health care. Prof. Cristina Ortiz heads the faculty, and Outreach handles logistics. You can learn more at http://www.uwgb.edu/univcomm/news/archive/2008/08-56.htm.

Teacher killed in crash had UW-Green Bay ties
Tracy Cline, the 35-year-old Sheboygan teacher whose death earlier this month in an I-43 crash drew public attention because of her impact on students and her community, had a campus connection. She had been pursing master's degree credits through UW-Green Bay. The Sheboygan newspaper carried an article on Cline at http://www.sheboygan-press.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080309/SHE0101/803090485/1061/SHE01.

Budget repair plans might dig bigger hole for future, analysts say
A report from the Legislature's nonpartisan budget office says that each of two plans to fill the budget gap — the Governor's and the Assembly Republicans — would substantially increase the potential shortfall in the next budget. See http://www.madison.com/wsj/home/local/277682.

Survey: College students complain of stress
A poll by the Associated Press reveals that college students are stressed often, which can lead to trouble concentrating, sleeping, or more serious problems; however, nearly two-thirds of students say they enjoy life despite the stress. See http://www.cnn.com/2008/LIVING/wayoflife/03/18/college.stress.ap/index.html?iref=newssearch.

Coffee shop, rodent house receive go-ahead at UW-Madison
The State Building Commission approved two UW System projects this week: a new coffee shop at UW-Madison's Memorial Union, and a holding facility for rodents to be built adjacent to a major new research facility. Coffee and lab-rat fans will want to read more at http://www.madison.com/wsj/home/local/277878.

Softball at Rebel Spring Games in Orlando
You can't play outdoor softball in the Midwest right now, but the weather in Florida is just right for the annual Rebel Spring Games bringing together softball squads from across the country. They play a lot of games in a short period of time (two a day for a week). The UW-Green Bay team is doing fairly well this week. Vegas road trip for Phoenix women
What happens in Vegas... gets reported in the LOG. The Green Bay women's tennis team (0-10) didn't have much luck with its spring break trip to Nevada for a pair of non-conference matches. For an update, http://uwgbathletics.cstv.com/sports/w-tennis/wigb-w-tennis-body.html.
