UW-Green Bay Log News, faculty, staff newsletter

Vol. 39, No. 79, March 5, 2008     /     Log Archive

Talk-show hotlines are overloaded. Business is at a standstill. Some local schools are believed to be closing early, or operating on a two-hour delay. Meanwhile, at UW-Green Bay on Day 1 A.B. (After Brett), Chancellor Bruce Shepard tells us he has received numerous inquiries as to whether flags will be lowered and an official day of mourning (or melancholy, anyway) declared. "Not yet," Shepard says, "but I'm awaiting word from the Governor, momentarily." Be brave, people. In real news, here's a bonus mid-week edition of the LOG newsletter:

Coincidentally, our state's motto is '4-ward'
Think our UW-Green Bay delegation at the State Capitol today isn't hearing a lot of Brett Favre-related comments and condolences? That's OK. Anything that brings more traffic past the Green Bay display is welcome and well-deserved. Eight star students are exhibiting five research projects today (Wednesday, March 5) as part of the annual "Posters in the Rotunda." We'll have a recap and photos in an upcoming issue.

Brahms is on the program for Saturday's student choral concert
The UW-Green Bay Concert Choir and the Chorale will each perform a work by Johannes Brahms at their concert at 7:30 p.m. Saturday (March 8) in Fort Howard Hall of the Weidner Center. Prof. Randall Meder conducts. Three guest artists, on harp and horns, will join the 33-member Concert Choir in its performance of Brahms' "Vier Gesänge," Op. 17. The 39-voice Chorale will perform Brahms' quartet, "An die Heimat," accompanied by faculty pianist David Severtson. Schachtner earns Academic All-America recognition
UW-Green Bay student Mike Schachtner, a junior forward on the Phoenix basketball team, has for the second consecutive year received Academic All-America recognition from CoSIDA, the College Sports Information Directors of America. His resume includes a 3.81 gradepoint average in psychology, and 15 points per game as an all-Horizon League athlete. Schachtner joins Tony Bennett, Class of '92, as the only Phoenix player to be honored multiple times. You can see how Schachtner fits on this year's elite list at http://uwgbathletics.cstv.com/sports/m-baskbl/spec-rel/022608aab.html.

State Assembly passes resolution commending life, work of Prof. Anne Kok
At 11 a.m. today (Wednesday, March 5), the State Assembly was scheduled to read and pass a resolution commending the life and work of the late Anne Kok. State Assembly Joint Resolution 107 was co-sponsored by Rep. Garey Bies and Sen. Alan Lasee, legislators representing her hometown of Sturgeon Bay. The resolution noted her public service to the world (Peace Corps and international outreach, to Wisconsin (as a social work educator), and to Door County (as a citizen and former director of a local crisis center).

Hammersmith a finalist for Metropolitan State University presidency
UW-Green Bay Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs Sue K. Hammersmith is one of five finalists for the presidency of Metropolitan State University. Her campus visit and interviews are scheduled for March 11 and 12. Metropolitan State University's main campuses are in St. Paul and Minneapolis. The University serves nearly 9,000 students, most of them from the Twin Cities area.

Forum at UW-Madison on proposed code changes
An open forum sponsored by UW-Madison was held Tuesday to encourage discussion of proposed changes to the UW System's code of conduct. The competing student dailies offer coverage at http://badgerherald.com/news/2008/03/05/forum_yields_conduct.php and http://www.dailycardinal.com/article/2238.

Live from Madison: The Board of Regents
The March Board of Regents meeting will be webcast this week from Madison, via live audio and video streaming, as part of a one-day extravaganza on Thursday (March 6) from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. (with a half-hour break for lunch from 12 to 12:30 p.m.) If you're not watching Thursday's big Brett Favre press conference, tune in at http://www.uwex.edu/ics/stream/regents/meetings/.

Tourney journey ends at Valpo
An exciting UW-Green Bay men's basketball season ended Tuesday night with a hard-fought 75-67 loss at Valparaiso in the Horizon League tournament opener. The young Phoenix finished 15-15 overall, with a respectable Sagarin computer rating of 137 (out of 340 Division I teams), as of today. Former women's standout Berglin signs with WNBA team
Natalie Berglin, a former point guard for the UW-Green Bay women's basketball team, signed a training camp contract Monday with the WNBA's Connecticut Sun. Berglin ranks fifth in Phoenix history with 423 assists and is tied for tenth with 1,233 career points. She finished her collegiate basketball career with a career-high 28 points and six three-pointers against UConn in the second round of the 2007 NCAA Tournament.
