Breaking news from the LOG newsletter for faculty, staff and friends of the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay:
David J. Ward the choice for interim chancellor
The UW System announced today (Thursday, May 1) that President Kevin Reilly will recommend the Regents confirm David J. Ward as interim chancellor for UW-Green Bay. Ward, currently president of NorthStar Economics, would begin his duties June 23. For the full news release from System: http://www.wisconsin.edu/news/2008/r080501.htm.
Ward is Green Bay native, former student and faculty member here
David Ward calls Green Bay his hometown. He grew up here, started college at the UW's Green Bay Center and began his teaching career in 1969 as an assistant professor when the "new" four-year UW-Green Bay opened for business on the Shorewood site. He taught business administration courses during his seven years on campus and initiated and hosted two nationally syndicated educational television series on consumer experience and family risk management. He delivered the commencement address here in 1997 when his daughter Julie Ward Fricke received her bachelor's degree from UW-Green Bay; she was a staff member in the Cofrin Library.
Ward: 'history is important' and service is a 'privilege'
As quoted in today's news release, David Ward said: "As a first-generation college student, I feel that the UW System gave me a tremendous educational opportunity, and I was fortunate to be part of that educational system for many years. This seems to complete the circle. UW-Green Bay is where I started as a student, and where I began my academic career. That history is important, and the opportunity to serve my hometown and my alma mater in this way is a privilege."
Shepard comments
The UW System news release quotes Chancellor Bruce Shepard: "The appointment of David Ward is a very clear expression of President Reilly's intent to keep the momentum going at UW-Green Bay and to continue to strengthen connections between the campus and community."
He came highly recommended, even back then
Flash back to the late 1960s and comments provided by UW-Green Bay officials to help the News Bureau publicize the hiring of David Ward: School of Professional Studies Dean Rollin B. Posey said of him, "He is an enterprising young man, one who will go a long way in his field." Faculty member Lloyd S. Nesberg said, "I would expect him to be 'sought after,' as the phrase goes, by others."
Ward's career
David Ward brings plenty of leadership experience to this interim chancellor role. He was the No. 2 senior administrator for the UW System as Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Deputy to the President of the UW System in the late 1990s. At UW-Oshkosh from 1976 through 1994, Ward was a professor of finance, chairman for the Department of Finance and Business Law, the acting chancellor during a transition period and the vice chancellor of academic affairs and chief deputy to the chancellor. After his career in education, Ward, in 2000, established NorthStar Economics, an economic consulting company that has conducted studies in 57 Wisconsin Counties, 11 states and Washington D.C.
