Vol. 39, No. 117, May 12, 2008     /     Log Archive

Here's a LOG shout-out to Francis Stephen Castelluccio, a former Jersey boy who celebrated his 74th birthday earlier this month. He'll bring his Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame credentials to campus for a show Wednesday (May 14) at the Weidner Center. Advance reviews suggest he still packs a decent falsetto to go along with his sometimes under-rated "regular" voice. In news today:

Shhhhhh.... Pre-sale is for employees only
Remember, the popular heirloom plant sale is Saturday, May 17, beginning at 9 a.m. But again, persons employed on campus (and only persons employed on campus) can shop in advance from 1 to 5 p.m. on Friday, May 16. It's a work perk that works only if the early buyers refrain from cleaning out lesser-stocked varieties or publicizing the perk too widely. For an overview of the sale, http://www.uwgb.edu/univcomm/news/archive/2008/08-109.htm

Congressman visits to tout '21st Century GI Bill' on campus
Congressman Steve Kagen (D-Wis.) came to campus Monday to talk about the added benefits a new "21st Century GI Bill" would have. The program, which could go to the floor for Congressional approval in a few weeks, would give veterans extra time to decide their educational options. It also expands education benefits to include the National Guard, Kagen said. He estimates the program would cost about $2.5 billion to $2.7 billion, or about the cost of two weeks of war in Iraq and Afghanistan, he said. The proposed bill is receiving bipartisan support. Chancellor Bruce Shepard introduced Kagen and said veterans contribute to learning at UW-Green Bay and add extra value to the University. The number of veterans enrolled here increased 25 percent in the 2007-08 school year.
