Click here for May edition of Bruce Shepard's Chancellor's FYI
Paper copies of Chancellor Bruce Shepard's monthly newsletter were sent last week to our off-campus mailing list of civic and community leaders, retirees, key alumni, and to various University advisory boards and friends groups. On campus, distribution is now strictly electronic (as suggested by many faculty and staff readers.) If you're interested in Shepard's end-of-year essay and the month's preview of campus news and events, go to Chancellor's FYI at http://www.uwgb.edu/chancellor/fyi/08mayfyi.htm
Four barrels of food at Campus Cookout
From the Human Resources office, regarding the food drive: "Thank you for your donations to Paul's Pantry at the Cookout on Tuesday... almost 4 barrels of food was donated! Thank You!"
'Free' bus service under consideration for campus
Well, nothing is ever free... but with the pledge of an increased subsidy from campus sources the community's bus service is considering something called the "U-Pass program." The University would partner with Green Bay Metro on a pilot program offering free bus rides to students, faculty and staff who show their campus ID cards. The Green Bay Transit Commission will consider the proposal at a special meeting at 8:15 a.m. Friday (May 16), at the main Green Bay Metro Station, 901 University Ave. Look for details and an announcement, if any, as early as Friday afternoon. See http://www.greenbaypressgazette.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080513/GPG0101/805130554/1207/GPG01
For UW-Green Bay staffer Christensen, Myanmar disaster hits close
Some on campus may know that Mona Christensen has been a frequent visitor to the nation of Myanmar (Burma) on previous aid trips assisting refugees and orphans. She's familiar with the region, and people, affected by the killer typhoon. The Green Bay Press-Gazette tells the story at http://www.greenbaypressgazette.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/200805130407/GPG0101/805130540
Wisconsin social workers recognize Prof. Anne Kok as 'Distinguished'
The late Prof. Anne Kok is not forgotten. The Wisconsin Chapter of the National Association of Social Workers announces it has selected Kok, posthumously, to receive its prestigious Distinguished Social Worker award. The organization's annual conference is this week, with the awards ceremony set for Friday (May 16) at the Sheraton Madison Hotel on John Nolen Drive.
Three senior art students win awards for 'outstanding exhibitions'
Winners of UW-Green Bay's 2008 "Outstanding Senior Exhibitions" are Jennifer Barnes, Cathy Marks and Joseph Weber.
• Barnes exhibited a large suite of encaustic paintings on log segments, reflecting natural processes and topography.
• Marks fabricated a series of enameled brooches that featured snapshots of domesticity with comical and nostalgic overtones.
• Weber created organic ceramic forms that confronted the symmetry of traditional functional ceramics. One of these works functioned as a fundraising "bank" which invited visitors to make donations toward children's art programming at Green Bay's Art Garage.
The awards are significant honors that demonstrate the Art Faculty's respect for the students' efforts. Faculty selected the honorees from a total of 10 students participating in the Senior Art Exhibitions, held annually each spring. The Art program currently numbers over 150 majors with programs in eight different studio areas as well as Art Education and Gallery/Museum Practices, and features a focus on interdisciplinary problem-solving.
Students win awards, scholarships from Space Grant Consortium
The Wisconsin Space Grant Consortium has awarded scholarships and research awards to five University of Wisconsin-Green Bay undergraduate students for the 2007-08 academic year. Recipients of Undergraduate Scholarships are:
• Antonio Castillo, a junior majoring in mechanical engineering and minoring in physics, $1,000. Castillo attended Green Bay Preble High School.
• Kevin Schwarten, a senior majoring in earth science and minoring in education, $1,000. Schwarten attended Milwaukee Pius XI High School.
Recipients of Undergraduate Research Awards and their projects are:
• Ruben Behnke, a senior majoring in environmental science and researching time series analysis of terrestrial changes and their effect on climate change, $2,500. Behnke attended Hilbert High School.
• Matthew Christman, a senior majoring in earth science and researching extraterrestrial microtextures at the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History, $2,000. Christman attended Green Bay West High School.
• Zachary Christman, a senior majoring in environmental science and researching extraterrestrial microtextures at the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History, $1,500. Christman attended Green Bay West High School.
The Wisconsin Space Grant Consortium, headquartered at UW-Green Bay, supports students in science, mathematics and technology by funding research, student scholarships and outreach projects in a wide variety of fields related to aerospace.
New home for University Ticketing/Information
Already announced campuswide but repeated here for the benefit of our off-campus and retiree readers: The University Ticketing and Information Center is up and running in its brand-new, remodeled space on the second floor of the University Union. Services remain the same:
• Ticketing for University Theatre and Music shows
• Weidner Center shows
• UW-Green Bay Athletics (on-campus games)
• Campus info center, directions
• Postage & supplies, mail dropoff, UPS shipping, faxing, more
Customers should continue to call (920) 465-2400 for University Information or (920) 465-2217 for University Ticketing Services.
Green ribbons for graduation day
They're still advertising the "green ribbon initiative" for graduating seniors who want to express solidarity with green thinking on Commencement Day. The signup station is outside Denise Scheberle's office, MAC B 306. This initiative is sponsored by SGA and PEA. Students should contact Sara Duginske at dugisb15@uwgb.edu if they have questions.
Next 'Teen Connection' looks at teen courts
The next Teen Connection program is 7 p.m. on Wednesday, May 21, on the stations of Wisconsin Public Television including Channel 38 locally. The topic is Teen Court, an intervention program for juveniles ages 12-16 who commit violations such as retail theft, minor theft, disorderly conduct, curfew infraction, or minor property damage. As part of the program, first-time offenders can voluntarily enter the Teen Court system to receive a sentence from a teen jury instead of municipal court sentencing. NEWIST/CESA 7, Educational TV Productions of Northeastern Wisconsin and WPT collaborate on the program originating live from the studios here at UW-Green Bay.
