Music students to descend on campus for Solo and Ensemble Festival
Have a bulletin board or reader rack that needs updating? Might want to do it before this Saturday (May 3). About 3,000 high school and middle school students from around the region, along with their parents, friends, and music directors will be on campus for the Wisconsin School Music Association State Solo and Ensemble Festival. For more on the event, http://www.uwgb.edu/univcomm/news/archive/2008/08-121.htm

Two years in a row, we're No. 1
In the kind of harmless fun that doesn't mean all that much but is still good for school spirit, for the second straight year a mail-in poll has proclaimed UW-Green Bay to be a 2008 "Best of the Bay" pick in the local college/university category as voted on by Northeastern Wisconsin readers of the Green Bay Press-Gazette. Their special section appears in the paper on May 17.

Visiting scholar has big name, big voice
Make sure to say "ciao" (that's "hello" in Italian) to visiting scholar, Prof. Anna Toccafondi, if you see her around campus. Toccafondi will be here Thursday through Wednesday (May 7), coaching UW-Green Bay singers and giving voice lessons. She will also spend an afternoon at St. Norbert College. Toccafondi has studied the classics throughout Europe and has sung with well-known opera performers including Alessandro Corbelli, Liliana Poli, Leonardo De Lisi, Lorna Windsor, Barbara De Maio and more. She teaches piano accompaniment at the G.B. Martini Conservatoire in Bologna, Italy, and is the vocal coach for the annual summer courses for opera singers held by the University of Michigan in Florence, Italy.

Governor says he hopes meeting gets budget deal
Gov. Doyle meets with legislative leadership today (Thursday, May 1) to try to reach agreement on how to solve the state budget shortfall. See http://www.madison.com/tct/news/stories/284113

'Student loan plan advances: Senate measure raises amount for borrowing'
That was the headline in Thursday's Journal-Sentinel after the U.S. Senate passed a bill, similar to one passed by the House of Representatives last month, that would improve access to federally backed student loans: http://www.jsonline.com/story/index.aspx?id=745895

Reminder: Input wanted on proposed University web site designs
The new University web site is scheduled to be launched Aug. 18, with a beta version to be available for use starting July 21. You can stay updated on this project by visiting the Redesign blog at
https://blog.uwgb.edu/redesign The final design should be selected and announced before the semester ends.

Ganyard says other changes in store with Web services this summer
Campus Webmaster Paula Ganyard says "This summer will bring many changes for Web services on campus. Here is a quick but important rundown for all web authors:
FrontPage replaced by Expression Web - Microsoft has replaced their web editor FrontPage with Expression Web. Everyone will be converted to this new editor as you receive your Office 2007 upgrades. Some people have already received this. For training please use the new online training available at http://www.uwgb.edu/compserv/ehelp/onlineTraining.htm This change does not require you to do anything other than start using it in place of FrontPage. For off-campus access you should continue to do what you have been doing. If you have FrontPage at home you can continue to use that, Dreamweaver or any other editor.
New Web Server - along with the launch of the new Web site, there will also be a new server launched on August 18. To help make this transition easy we ask that everyone with a web site review all of the files on those sites. Remember that web sites are not storage drives; they should only contain the files that are part of your web site. This means that any MP3, video, PowerPoint files, etc. that are not part of the site should be removed. This means that all images on the web site should be optimized to the appropriate size for the web or removed. Sites will be checked for compliance, so please take a few minutes to do some clean-up.
Elimination of FrontPage Server Extensions - this summer will also be the end to FrontPage Server Extensions. A number of years ago we stopped supporting these extensions for themes and other features within FrontPage, but we continued to support the database connection piece. If you have a web site that uses a form to collect data into a database and that database resides within an FPDB folder please contact the University Webmaster (ganyardp@uwgb.edu) for assistance in converting these forms.
Blogging now available - we have installed the blogging software WordPress and can now offer blogs for university departments, faculty, staff, and student organizations. If you are interested in this service you can learn more about it at or contact the University Webmaster at ganyardp@uwgb.edu
Any questions about any of these updates, please contact Paula Ganyard, University Webmaster at ext 2951 or ganyardp@uwgb.edu

Early coverage of Ward announcement

No, not THAT David Ward
Today's announcement that David J. Ward is the choice for interim chancellor at UW-Green Bay reminds us of a time in Madison, a decade or so ago, when between the former UW System administrator in Van Hise Hall and the former UW chancellor in Bascom Hall it was hard to keep your David Wards straight. We're getting the Green Bay/Oshkosh version. Here, just to be clear, is the other version: http://www.news.wisc.edu/packages/wardlegacy/bio.html

Parkside announces its four chancellor finalists

Former dean sues Whitewater over what he says was racist persecution
A former dean of UW-Whitewater's College of Letters and Sciences has filed a federal lawsuit against the Board of Regents alleging racial discrimination as the reason for his termination; an investigation by the Wisconsin Equal Rights Division previously found no basis for the claim. The campus paper had coverage at http://media.www.royalpurplenews.com/media/storage/paper1225/news/2008/04/30/News/Ross-Sues.Uw.System.For.Racial.Discrimination-3355718.shtml
