Presidential candidates champion a gas-tax holiday, others promise to soak Big Oil, and the U.S. House votes to sue OPEC for price-fixing. All well and good, but while we're at it, why not also consider some sort of federal subsidy to relight America's lamp of leadership in the whale-oil industry? A cetacean nation turning to its Melvillean past to power its future. Think about it. Meanwhile, in real news today:
• Say hello to mellow (or MLLO)
• Hammersmith snapshots
• Cofrin Library: 'Keep those books longer'
• Golf for scholarships
• Sergio Garcia coming here?
• P-G tribute to Shepards
• Reminder: June 11 celebration
• Callahan retirement
• Deadman retirement
• Snapshots from Great Lakes signing ceremony
• Test of emergency-communication channels
• Kids in the Hall are here Sunday
• More news Friday, including appointment of 'The Committee'
New project: Say hello to mellow (or MLLO)
It's called the MLLO Project (pronounced mellow) and subtitled "Assessing Mission Level Student Learning Objectives." This spring a group of faculty, staff and administrators initiated MLLO to focus our collective attention on the anticipated student learning outcomes identified in our select mission. This project's roots extend back to last summer, when the Higher Learning Commission selected UW-Green Bay to participate in a voluntary, competitive program called the Academy for the Assessment of Student Learning. The MLLO Project's steering committee spoke with several campus groups this spring, and the initiative moves forward this summer by examining the role student services play in our students' overall experience, and by preparing for data collection from academic programs in the fall. If you want to learn more or get involved, check out the website at http://www.uwgb.edu/MLLO and feel free to contact any of the steering committee members listed there.
Reception snapshots, and a farewell to Sue K. Hammersmith
We put a few photos online from last week's reception for the outgoing provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs, Sue K. Hammersmith. In little more than a month, she'll assume the presidency at Metro State in Minnesota. It says here Friday (May 30) is her last day on campus. For photos, click

Cofrin Library says 'Keep those books as long as you want!' (Almost)
Effective immediately, the Cofrin Library now has longer loan periods on books and government documents for faculty and staff. Anything that circulated for 90 days in the past will now circulate for an entire semester. Due dates on items will be 5/30, 8/30 or 12/30 with one renewal. Items checked out for 28 days before the term date will roll to the next term date. For example, if something is checked out on May 15, the due date will be August 30, rather than May 30. Due dates on Cofrin Library items will now also be the same as those items requested via Universal Borrowing. Bringing all due dates in line will certainly make due dates easy to remember. If you have any questions, please contact Emily Rogers at the Circulation Desk, 465-2304.
Reason to leave campus? Scholarships, golf
Come by yourself or bring three officemates to the 28th Annual Alumni Association Scholarship Golf Outing, Friday, June 13. Proceeds support student scholarships. Plan for a 10 a.m. shotgun start at Royal Scot Golf Course in New Franken. Alumni Director Mark Brunette promises (in no particular order) fun, 18 holes of golf, a beverage or two, lunch, post-golf hors d'oeuvres reception, doors prizes and more! Prizes are awarded to the team with the lowest scores and handicap winners. Cost is $85 per golfer or $320 per foursome. Contact the alumni office at alumni@uwgb.edu or (920) 465-2586 to request a registration brochure or to find out more.
Press-Gazette reports Sergio Garcia will visit Green Bay for Phoenix
No official announcement from Green Bay Athletics, but the Press-Gazette is reporting that PGA golf star Sergio Garcia will visit in early September for a high-powered fundraiser for Phoenix sports. The connection is former UW-Green Bay golfer Mark King '81, now president of TaylorMade-adidas and a friend and business associate of Garcia who helped set up last summer's successful fundraiser with another TaylorMade endorser, swing guru Jim Flick. See http://www.greenbaypressgazette.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080528/GPG0203/805280698/-1/archive.
'Lasting legacy'
Teamwork was a big part of Bruce and Cyndie Shepard's time here at UW-Green Bay. The highly visible couple together helped strengthen the University's connection with the community and the region, according to an article in Sunday's Green Bay Press-Gazette. They'll stay a team when they move to Washington this summer as Bruce takes the job as president of Western Washington University in Bellingham.

Reminder: June 11 celebration
Chancellor and Mrs. Bruce Shepard invite faculty, staff and University friends to a reception Wednesday, June 11, from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Kress Events Center, where they'll thank campus and community for their friendship and support the past seven years.
Karen Callahan retirement party on June 5
That popular, capable and suddenly silver academic department associate in Social Work (previously of the chancellor's office and business admin), Karen Callahan, is calling it quits. Reminder: Her retirement gathering runs from 3 to 4:30 p.m. on Thursday (June 5) in CL 735.
Sandy Deadman, Academic Advising, announces retirement after 32+ years
Another popular and capable veteran of UW-Green Bay (more than 32 years!), Sandy Deadman, director of Academic Advising, is retiring. Please join the Academic Advising Staff for a gathering 2 to 4 p.m. Wednesday, June 25, in Student Services 1600. Submit your memories or well wishes at http://www.uwgb.edu/advising/sandy/.
UW-Green Bay represented at Great Lakes Compact ceremony
Officials with UW-Green Bay ties were front and center earlier this week when Gov. Jim Doyle landed at nearby Bay Beach Park to sign Wisconsin's ratification of the Great Lakes Compact. See photos at http://www.uwgb.edu/univcomm/news/PHOTOARCH/events/080527GLcompact.htm.
Test of emergency-communication channels
How would UW-Green Bay respond to a large-scale, life-threatening incident? Employees from across campus took part in a simulation exercise Wednesday that tested the institution's ability to mobilize a central "call center," to redirect Web communication via backup technology, and provide emergency notification as well as timely and useful information updates to the campus and general community. Staff members taking part in the exercise included individuals from Public Safety, Student Affairs, various Information Services units, University Communication and others. It is expected Wednesday's event will inform development of new communication protocols and procedures that will be shared campuswide.
Kids in the Hall are here Sunday
Discovered by Lorne Michaels, creator of "Saturday Night Live," The Kids in the Hall troupe of five sketch comedians drew national acclaim with their weekly HBO comedy show in the 1990s, and oddball creations like the half human Chicken Lady, the vengeful "head crusher" and the chauvinist Cabbage Head. They're coming to the Weidner Center this Sunday (June 1), at 7:30 p.m. Check out tickets at http://www.uwgb.edu/weidner/Calendar.htm.
More news Friday, including appointment of 'The Committee'
Didn't see your submission here? Look for it Friday morning (May 30). We'll have another issue of the LOG newsletter at that time. Also, we're told, Friday will be the day UW System announces the makeup of the search committee that will help identify UW-Green Bay's new chancellor. See you then.
