UW-Green Bay Log News, faculty, staff newsletter

Vol. 39, No. 113, May 6, 2008     /     Log Archive

This is the LOG newsletter for faculty and staff of the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay on Tuesday, May 6. Some loyal readers may have noticed we're a little off our normal schedule this week. (We typically distribute an issue every Monday, but not this week.) Sorry. Maybe we were disoriented by the warm temperatures and the appearance of an unfamiliar, glowing, yellow-orange sphere in the sky. In news today:

Laatsch details
'Soft Opening' for new Union is Wednesday!
Remembering a friend, Donald J. Long Sr.
Jazz reminder
More to come

June 16 start date likely for William Laatsch, interim provost
On-campus readers of the LOG newsletter are already aware of Chancellor Bruce Shepard's appointment last week of Prof. William Laatsch as interim provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs. Laatsch will step in to assume the duties of Sue K. Hammersmith, who is resigning to become president of Metropolitan State University in Minnesota. Laatsch, an award-winning professor of Urban and Regional Studies, is UW-Green Bay's longest-serving faculty member. "This is great news not only for UWGB but for the region we proudly serve," said Shepard, who noted that in addition to his outstanding work as a faculty member and campus citizen, Laatsch "has demonstrated significant leadership and knowledge of challenges facing higher education through his service as chairman of the Board of Trustees of Carroll College, his alma mater." It is expected Laatsch will assume his new duties June 16. For the full UW System news release, see http://www.uwgb.edu/univcomm/news/archive/2008/08-124.htm.

Passing of Donald J. Long
Donald J. Long, a local business leader whose volunteer work on behalf of UW-Green Bay — he co-chaired the first capital campaign that helped put the institution on the fast track for future growth — died Sunday at his Green Bay home. He was 80 years of age. Long has a residence hall named in his honor at UW-Green Bay. That honor is fitting, given that Long co-chaired with Jim Temp the early 1980s campaign that raised more than $2.5 million for scholarships, professorships and the seed money that built the first dorms. Long was the founder of Imperial Inc., which made parts for auto and trucking industries. He served as an officer and board member for the University's Founders Association and the University Village Housing Inc. board. He and his wife, Darlene, have remained active with UW-Green Bay and made a substantial gift to the new Kress Events Center. Visitation will be Thursday at Blaney Funeral Home and Friday before the 10:30 a.m. service at St. Patrick Catholic Church, 211 N. Maple St. A full obituary will be online Wednesday at http://www.greenbaypressgazette.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080506/GPG010301/805060592/1212.

Reminder: Beatles, Cash, Coltrane jazz
UW-Green Bay's annual spring jazz concert is 7:30 p.m. Wednesday (May 7) with the two jazz bands and the Vocal Jazz Ensemble performing in the University Theatre. See http://www.uwgb.edu/univcomm/news/archive/2008/08-122.htm.
