Governor announces support for
UW-Green Bay growth initiative
Gov. Jim Doyle visited the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay campus
Monday (Feb. 12) to announce his support for funding of Northeastern Wisconsin's
Growth Agenda. The governor’s announcement came one day before he
unveils his 2007-09 state budget proposal at the state Capitol. At a news
conference in the University Union, Doyle announced that his budget plan
will include $1.7 million for the first phase of the Growth Agenda, which
calls for increasing enrollment at UW-Green Bay from about 5,300 students
to 7,500 students.

Gov.
Doyle’s budget proposal will strengthen UW-Green Bay’s ability
to “connect learning to life.”

UW-Green
Bay faculty, staff, students and community friends greeted the governor’s
announcement of his support for the growth initiative with a standing
ovation.
Gov. Doyle said states that invest in education will experience future
economic success.
UW-Green Bay chemistry student Erin Stache, left, introduced the governor
at the news conference and thanked him for his leadership on higher education
issues. Stache sits next to UW-Green Bay Chancellor Bruce Shepard, who
welcomed the governor to the campus. UW-Oshkosh Provost and Vice Chancellor
Lane Earns (right) and UW-Fox Valley Dean Jim Perry also attended the
event.
State, local and campus leaders attended the governor’s news conference
at UW-Green Bay. Seated in the front row are, from left, Green Bay Mayor
Jim Schmitt, state Rep. Jim Soletski, UW Regent Mary Cuene, state Sen.
