International vocal competition, on campus
 |
UW-Green Bay hosted preliminary and semi-final rounds
of the ninth Montreal International Czech and Slovak Voice
Competition at the Weidner Center in November.
Three key contributors to the event and the University's ability
to host were producer and Green Bay area patron of the arts Sharon
Resch (far left); opera star and educator Alain Nonat of Montreal,
who founded the competition; and UW-Green Bay Music Prof. Sarah
Meredith, event director. |
Retiring to compare evaluation sheets was an international panel of judges, from opera and music companies as far away as Slovakia and the Czech Republic.
Deputy Officer Borek Lizec of the Czech Consulate in Chicago presents a winner's carnation to young vocalist Daniel Capkovic of Bratislava, Slovakia. (The Sharon Chmel Resch Foundation of Green Bay supported a travel scholarship for the award-winning Capkovic to take part.) He and two others were selected to advance from the Green Bay preliminaries to the world finals that took place in late November in Montreal.
Amanda Hermann, a soprano from Ohio, also advanced to the Montreal finals, which were ultimately won by soprano Simone Osborne of Vancouver, British Columbia.
A distinguished panel of judges and competition officials stands behind the finalists (Capkovic, Hermann, and baritone Seth Carico of Michgan). Standing, from left, are Maestro Gildo Dinunzio of New York's Metropolitan Opera; Prof. Ales Kanka of the Prague Music Conservatory; Resch; Nonat; Eva Blahova of Bratislava's Academy of Dance and Music; Scott Stewart of Milwaukee's Florentine Opera; University of Michigan Prof. Tim Cheek, a leading expert on Czech vocal music; Prof. David Adams of the University of Cincinnati Conservatory of Music; Meredith; and Lizec.
Competition results were announced in the Weidner Center's Signature Lounge on the event's second day, Nov. 20. UW-Green Bay was the only U.S. site for the every-other-year event.
Seven singers made the semifinal round. Goals of the competition are to promote the Czech/Slovak vocal repertoire to young singers and to encourage exchange between the Czech Republic and Slovakia and North America.
