Magazine editor sees liberalism
on the rise in America
Michael Tomasky, editor-at-large of The American Prospect magazine, told a UW-Green Bay audience Monday, April 30 that liberalism has its best opportunity in years to gain a strong foothold in American political life. Visiting UW-Green Bay as part of the Historical Perspectives Lecture Series, Tomasky said the average person has seen conservative governance fail them in recent years. Tomasky provided his liberal view of America 11 days after leading conservative Michael Novak spoke on campus.
Prior to his lecture in Room 250 of Rose Hall, Michael Tomasky chats with Andrew Austin, Andrew Kersten and Lynn Walter, all members of UW-Green Bay's Social Change and Development faculty.
Tomasky said his "working, political definition" of liberalism is the ability to look beyond self-interest and see a larger common interest that may require a delay or denial of self-interest. "In a simple sentence, it's the idea that we're all in this together," he said.
Tomasky answered questions posed by UW-Green Bay students and faculty.
Tomasky met with students after his lecture concluded.
Prof. Harvey Kaye, who invited Tomasky to the campus, poses for a photo with the guest lecturer.
