Campus Web Statistics

Departmental web statistic reports are available on the UW- Green Bay Web Statistics page and can be run at anytime, as data will be processed nightly. These reports are not autmatically available with a web share, you will need to request that a report be created for your department by contacting the Help Desk and putting in a work order request.

Statistic reports are only set up for departmental web sites. Anyone else interested in statistics for a particular site should use the UW-Green Bay report. To see results for your particular site follow these steps

  1. Select the date, month, year or range for the statistics you need.
  2. Under the 'Pages & Files' heading click 'Requested Pages'.
  3. In the filter box type in the web share name for your site and click the + button to the left of the box.
  4. The results will now show only those pages with that term.

Interpreting the web statistics:

Getting Started:

Web Statistics are located at https://www.uwgb.edu/webdev/campus/webstats/. To view a report click on the name of the department. When trying to access them from off campus you will be prompted for your campus username and password. Remember to put uwgreenbay\ before your username.

Urchin Web Statistics are broken down into six sections with each section containing a number of reports and/or subsections. By default the Sessions Graph in the Traffic section will be displayed first and the date range will be for the current week. To expand a section and view the individual reports, click on the black arrow next to the section name. To view a specific report click on the name of the report.

Each report has a corresponding graphs, by default these are basic bar graphs, but you can switch to a SVG graph by clicking on the SVG bar graph button (black bars) or to a line graph by clicking on the line graph button. The SVG and line graphs will allow you to see exact numbers for a particular time period simply by hover over a bar within the graph if you have the Adobe SVG Viewer plugin. Note: This plug-in is not available for FireFox, but you can still view the basic graphs.

By default the reports will show 10 items at a time. You can change this by choosing another value from the #Shown menu at the top. You can view as many as 100 items per page. To see the next page of results click the 'Next' button at the bottom of the list. Also by default results are listed in descending order. To list in ascending order click the up or down arrow next to the column headers. By clicking on the line graph icon next to an individual page you will see detailed information. By clicking on the file you will link out to that particular page.

Traffic:

The reports in this section show the amount of visitors, hits and general traffic your site receives.

Sessions Graph:

This shows the number of Visitor Sessions on your Web site during a set time period. Sessions are a good way to determine how many people are coming to your site. A ‘Session’ is recorded when an individual visitor clicks on your site. It starts when the visitor arrives at your site, and ends when the browser is closed or there is a period of inactivity. WebTrends reported this as ‘Visits’.

Pageviews Graph:

A ‘Pageview’ is a request from a visitor’s browser for a web page. Pageviews will include items like PDFs, but will not include style sheets and JavaScript for example. WebTrends also reported this as pageviews.

Hits Graph:

A ‘Hit’ is counted when a request for any file has been successful, this includes html pages, images, sound files, scripts, etc. The Hits graph should not be used for reporting your how many people use your site. WebTrends also reported this as hits.

Bytes Graph:

This graph allows you to see the total volume of traffic on your site by counting all of the bytes that were requested for every html page, image, sound file, etc. WebTrends did not report this information.

Summary:

Overview of the information from the first four graphs along with averages Per Day and Per Session. WebTrends offered some of this information in the General Statistics section.

Pages & Files:

The reports in the Pages & Files tell you what your visitors are using or not using on your site.

Requested Pages:

This report ranks pages, by the number of pageviews, it had during the selected time period. WebTrends reported this statistic as ‘Top Documents’.

Downloads:

A download includes PDFs, executables, and other non-image and non-HTML documents. PDFs are listed in this report as well as on the Requested Pages report. The number is usually different between the two reports and that is due to the fact that a download is counted once no matter how many pages it has, while the count under Requested Pages will count the number of pages that were looked at. WebTrends reported this information under ‘Most Downloaded Files’.

Page Query Terms:

This report as it tracks dynamic application pages and forms using the GET method. WebTrends reported these as ‘Dynamic Pages & Forms’.

Posted Forms:

This report lists the top forms used on your site; however, it only includes forms that use the POST method. GET method forms are reported in the Page Query Terms report. WebTrends also reported these forms under the ‘Dynamic Pages & Forms’ section.

Status and Errors:

Each request for a file (hit) triggers a status code and this report shows that information. You can click on the blue arrow to the left of each code to view the files that triggered that code. You should page close attention to your 404 errors to see if there are broken links within your site. WebTrends reported this as ‘Client Errors’ and ‘Page Not Found Errors’.

All Files by Hits and All Files by Bites:

These reports will give the number of hits each file received or the amount of bytes transferred. 'All Files' means that it includes not only HTML pages, but also PDFs, sound files, images, style sheets, etc. WebTrends did not have an equivalent to this report.

Directory Drilldown:

This subsection contains the reports 'Directory by Pages Drilldown', 'Directory by Files Drilldown', and 'Directory by Bytes Drilldown'. Where the 'All Files' section lists files by popularity, these reports off the same information but list it using the file structure of your site. You can click on each folder (directory) and it will display the files and folders it contains. You can drill down to the lowest level of your site. To drill up click on the folder with the up arrow at located at the top of the list. WebTrends did not have an equivalent report.

Files Types:

The 'by Hits' and 'by Bytes' reports show how much of your traffic came from particular file types, such as css, gif, jpg, htm, etc. WebTrends did not have an equivalent report.

Navigation

The reports in this section will give you a sense of what a visitor does at your site and how long they stay.

Entrance Pages:

A page is counted as an ‘Entrance Page’ when it is the page a visitor's session starts on. While this is often your main page it isn’t always, so this gives you an idea of the pages that people are coming into first. These are ranked by PageViews, so images and style sheets are not counted. WebTrends reported this information under ‘Top Entry Pages’.

Exit Pages:

A page is counted as an ‘Exit Page’ when it is the last page visited in a Session. A session is ended either by the visitor leaving your site or after a period of inactivity. WebTrends reports this information under ‘Top Exit Pages’.

Bounce Rate:

This report lists the pages on which visitors entered and then exited without viewing any other page on your site, the Bounce Rate. While this report is ranked by Bounces, which are the number of times a visitor exited from the page without visiting any other page in the site, you can also sort the results by Entrances (total number of entrances the page has) and the Bounce Rate. WebTrends did not report this information.

Click Paths:

The ‘Click Paths’ report shows the most popular paths traveled by your visitors. Each entry lists one, two or three pages in the order they were viewed. If there was only one then it was both the entry and exit page. This report will only track up to a three page path. WebTrends tracked this information under the report ‘Top Paths Through Site’.

Click To and From:

This report shows the click through percentage for each page in the site. It shows how visitors got to that page and where they went after viewing it. (Note: this report will not list external pages.) This report is set up in a drill down format, so click folders until you find the file you would like to analysis and then click on the red and blue icon. The 'To/From' analysis window will open and display the ‘Previous Pages’ and ‘Next Pages’. The ‘Previous Pages’ are the pages the visitor was at before arriving at the page being analyzed. The ‘Next Pages’ are those pages the visitor went to after viewing the analyzed page. WebTrends did not have an equivalent to this report.

Length of Pageview:

‘Length of Pageview’ reports the average time spend on each Page for all Sessions; shown in hours:minutes:seconds. WebTrends did not report this information.

Depth of Session:

This report shows how many PageViews Visitors are seeing within a session. WebTrends reported this information under ‘By Number of Views’

Length of Session:

This report shows how much time visitors are spending on your site. WebTrends reported ‘By Length of Visit’.

Referrals

The reports in this section will give you a sense of how your visitors got to your Web site.

Referrals

This report ranks external web pages that brought traffic to your site. The ‘no referral’ counts those visitors who came to the site by typing in the URL or who had your site bookmarked. This information is useful in determining where your visitors are coming from and which ones are already aware of your site. WebTrends reported this under ‘Top Referring Sites’.

Search Terms

This report lists the actual keywords/phrases people type into search engines to find a page within your site. The results in this report are ranked by Sessions, so a word or phrase that has 4 sessions means that it was entered into a search engine four times. At the top of the table next to the word Search Terms it tells you how many different terms or phrases were entered. Click the Next button to see all of them. WebTrends tracked this information under the reports ‘Top Search Phrases’ and ‘Top Search Keywords’.

Search Engines

This report takes the search terms in the above report and groups them by the search engine used. Also ranked by sessions, the Search Engine report allows you to see what terms were used within in which search engine. Click the blue arrow to the left of the search engine to see the terms. WebTrends reported some of this data under ‘Top Search Engines’.

Referral Errors

Somewhat similar to the ‘Status and Errors’ report, the ‘Referral Errors’ report ranks the errors of individual pages and gives the opportunity to see from where the bad referral was made. By clicking on the blue arrow to the left of the error code you can see which pages have the bad links. This is very useful for tracking down bad links in your site or asking other sites to fix links. WebTrends sometimes reported this through the ‘Page Not Found Errors’ report.

Domains & Users

The reports in this section will give you a sense of where your visitors are located.

Domains

This report lists the networks (providors) that your visitors are using and the results are ranked by sessions. Not all networks can be resolved, so those are reported under ‘no entry’.

Domain Drilldown

‘Domain Drilldown’ ranks by sessions domains such as .com, .edu, and .org. By clicking on the blue arrow to the left of one of these you can see the complete domains of your visitors.

Countries

This report lists the US domains like .com, .edu, .org and all of the other domains outside the United States. Be careful when using these statistics as some domains may be used by individuals that don’t reside in the country of the domain.
