ABOUT

WGBX was founded in 2005 by Jason Habeck, and went on the air world-wide for the first time in October of 2007. It has been a long road since the campus had a radio station that broadcasted outside the confines of the University. The station was originally a FM station that broadcasted alternative rock in the late 1970's. The station was shut down after a protest broke out about the station being turned over to WPR, or Wisconsin Public Radio. From 1992 up until 2007 the station was solely played on channel 20 when there were even enough students to run shows.

After starting as a freshmen at the University, Habeck started to take hold of the station, after only one semester the University agreed that it was time for a change. In 2006 Andrew Pekarek came on board and was a vital part to starting the station. Both Pekarek and Habeck were passionate about the station and put in numerous hours configuring the new station. It was finally decided that the station be a strictly web streamed station in hopes one day that the station would be able to broadcast the athletics on campus.

Ben Kvalo became the Station Manager in the beginning of 2008 and has overseen a vast change in the station since taking over.  During his time as the Station Manager the station has a new booth, new equipment, a new website, and has tripled both the amount of DJs and the listenership.  Also, the station has gained the rights to broadcast Volleyball, Softball, and Soccer.  The stations growth continues and all the credit goes to the very dedicated DJs and Directors.
