School and University Exchange Programs Between Wisconsin and Francophone Countries
- Lycée Jacques Monod, St. Jean de Braye, FR
- Appleton, Wisconsin and Epernay, France
Teacher Donna Clementi of Appleton West High School and Martine Jobert of Lycée Léon Bourgeois, Epernay, France organize the exchange, which is ten years old. Each year, the exchange involves thirty students, aged 16 to 18. In spring of 1998, Epernay will come to Appleton, and in spring of 1999, Appleton goes to Epernay.
- Marquette University HS/ Divine Savior HS and Limoges, France
High School teachers Jim Radtke and Eileen Gleeson, of Marquette University High School and Divine Savior- Holy Angels High School are the contact people for an exchange with Lycée and Atelier Hôum;tellerie St. Jean in Limoges, France. American high school students who have had at least two years of French instruction participate in an exchange with St. Jean students in Premiere and Terminal. The students from St. Jean come in the fall, and Milwaukee students go to France in the spring. All students attend at least a week of classes in respective schools. St. Jean also has a "technical" hospitality/cooking school as part of its curriculum. At the present moment, there is a Wisconsin student taking cooking classes there for a year. The "Les Toussaints" are going there this summer. The exchange is eight years old.
- Wisconsin Rapids High School and Bordeaux, France
- Manitowoc Public Schools and Dormans, Champagne, France
Jaci Collins writes: In response to your recent e-mail, Manitowoc Public School District has
had an on-going exchange with le Collège Claude Nicolas Ledoux in Dormans,
Champagne, France. Washington and Wilson Junior High School students have
been corresponding via mail, faxing, and soon e-mail since 1990. Two years
ago, we had our first exchange of students. Fifteen Dormans students were
here in Manitowoc for two weeks in April and fifteen Manitowc students of
Wilson, Washington Junior Highs and Lincoln High School went to Dormans in
July. Once again in 1998, Dormans students will be in Manitowoc in April
and Manitowoc youth will be in Dormans in July. We're still in the process
of determining the size of the groups but there has been a significant
increase in interest in the exchange. The trips and exchanges are
coordinated by Manitowoc Public School District teachers: Jaci Collins,
Erin Quinn, Holly Paquette, with assistance of Foreign Language Department
Chairman, Keith Wakeman and by Dormans teachers: Christiane Mante, Nicole
Diot.
The exchanges have been very rewarding for all involved. They have
fostered some life time relationships between not only the students but
also families. We are all looking forward to another wonderful experience
this year.
- Carthage College, Kenosha, WI and 1) Sorbonne, 2)Douai, France
Irène Kraemer writes: Your message was forwarded to me by Prof. Marian Rothstein. I am glad
to inform you that Carthage has two exchange programs with France.
1. Firstly, we signed a convention with the Sorbonne quite a few years
ago facilitating the exchange of our mutual students. Carthage students
may spend a year in Paris, and Sorbonne students, at the graduate level,
may come to Carthage to work on an M.Ed. and teach lower level French
courses here. These French assistants receive a scholarship which covers
their tuition, room and board, and a small stipend. We typically invite
two students per year. Recently, we have made a similar arrangement
with the University of Caen.
2. Because Kenosha is the sister city of Douai, each year, we offer a one
year scholarship to a Douai student. This scholarship covers tuition --
the recepient is responsible for room and board. The purpose of this
scholarship is to facilite the practice of the American language and
culture for a French student.
