This is Louis Braille. He was born on January 4, 1809. When he was three, he became blind while playing in his father's workshop. He attended The Institute for the Blind. He met with Charles Barbier, who explained a system for reading, using raised dots. Louis Braille used the basic idea of Barbier's system, but made a simplified version. There are a total of 63 combinations of raised dots (instead of Barbier's hundreds). This was appropriately named the Braille system; this system is used everywhere in the world.
