NASA Academy is a program
for students of junior, senior, or early graduate levels. The intent of
this program is to give the selected students a working knowledge of NASA
and its programs. The Academy accomplishes this through interactive sessions
with leaders within government, industry, and academia and research in
NASA's laboratories. The students will discover how NASA and its Field
Centers operate, understand the NASA link to the private sector, gain experience
in world-class laboratories, participate in a team environment where people
work together to accomplish common goals, and build professional bonds
among our future leaders.
The Academy consists of competitively selected university level students from all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico. These students work on research projects at a specific NASA Field Center under the direction of some of the most innovative scientists and engineers working for NASA. This technical work for each student is arranged in advance, by matching student interests and skills to project requirements, as identified by the student and the researcher. Students also participate in seminars and discussions with government and business leaders and managers on space-related topics. Program elements are divided between research, tours, and seminars. This year, the Academy will be conducted in these field centers: Goddard Space Flight Center and Ames Research Center. Each Center focuses on a different NASA-related research and specialty.
