Purpose: The Wisconsin Space Grant Consortium (WSGC) is looking for 4-6 full-time students from any affiliate member institution majoring in a science or engineering discipline to join the launch team of our high-altitude balloon project, Elijah. Awards: Each intern will receive a $4000 award, paid in increments. All funding is subject to availability. Work period: The WSGC estimates that each selected student will spend approximately 1-2 hours per week on this project (with the bulk of this time clustering around launch dates), plus six days for training workshops and launch days. Students will be launch team members for the period from approximately 15 May 2008 to 15 May 2009. Location: Meetings of the team will take place in either Milwaukee or Green Bay, Wisconsin, but because much of the internship work may be done off-site, students from any location are encouraged to apply. Students must be able to provide their own transportation. Program description: The Wisconsin Space Grant Consortium (WSGC) is pleased to announce the Student Satellite Initiative, an innovative NASA project that provides opportunities for students to fly their science experiments in a near-space environment. Student teams will design and build science payloads to be launched and retrieved from a high-altitude balloon that will ascend up to 100,000 feet. Selected teams will design and build science experiments to fly in this environment, assist in the launch of their satellite, track and chase the balloon as it traverses, and retrieve it upon landing. Students involved in this internship will comprise the launch team for this project. Selected students will commit to approximately three or four launches of the Elijah Balloon, to be scheduled mutually by the launch and science payload teams. Additionally, launch team members will be responsible for attending a 1-2 day training workshop in February or March of 2008 and for running such a training workshop in February or March of 2009. Launch Team members will also be responsible for presenting their results at the annual Wisconsin Space Conference, to be held at UW-Fox Valley in Menasha, WI, August 14 & 15, 2008. Requirements: This internship opportunity is open to U.S. citizens enrolled during the work period at the sophomore or junior level at any Affiliate Member institution of the WSGC. Students enrolled in a two-year program who declare their plan to be enrolled at another WSGC Affiliate University at the end of their sophomore year are also eligible to apply. Preference will be given to applicants with a minimum 2.5 GPA, and those who can demonstrate a strong interest in the success of the project. Motivation is more important than experience, with self-motivation and ability to complete work with minimal supervision being absolutely critical. Because selected student(s) will be committed to working with this project from January 2008 to approximately May of 2009, students must be enrolled through May of 2009.
