This is the genus Cystopteris, several species of which are very difficult to identify with confidence. The following characters are closely modeled on the Flora of North America, Vol 2.

60. Blade broadest at or near the base; rachis, and midribs of the ultimate segments bearing some glandular hairs; bulblets sometimes present on the rachis.

60. Blade broadest near the middle; rachis, and midribs of the ultimate segments without glandular hairs; bulblets not present. This group can also be difficult to distinguish, especially for dried specimens for which the stem characters are not known. 63
