Huperzia porophila is distinguished within the genus by leaves with nearly parallel sides and the number of stomates on the upper leaf surface fewer than 50 (requires microscope). In Wisconsin this species is found only in the southwestern portion of the state and often on sandstone cliffs. It extends a short distance into adjacent Minnesota and Iowa and is also found from southern Illinois and Missouri to Virginia and Pennsylvania.
