Fronds of Polystichum acrostichoides are dimorphic. The distal pinnae of fertile fronds are reduced in size and the abaxial (under) surface is essentially covered with sori. Blades are once pinnate and there is an auricle (conspicuous lobe) pointing toward the tip of the blade at the base of each sterile pinna. Sterile pinna margins also bear spiny-tipped teeth.

P. acrostichoides ranges from Nova Scotia to Florida, west to Texas and Minnesota. In Wisconsin is listed as a "special concern" species. It is found primarily in the southern counties and at two locations in the Door peninsula, in a variety of habitats.
