Hand Building and an Introduction to Wheel Throwing for Raku Firing

August 1 - 5, 2022

For campers entering grades 6-8
COMMUTER CAMP - GREEN BAY CAMPUS
Where there's smoke, there’s fire - it's Raku! There'll be plenty of both in this ceramics class. Learn hand-building techniques while creating functional and sculptural ceramic forms. You will be introduced to throwing pots on the potter’s wheel. Set your goals high your efforts can measure up to 30-inches tall. You will learn the raku firing process, using fire and smoke to achieve dramatic glazing effects. Professional potter and instructor, Dean Hoegger, will provide plenty of attention to both campers new to the ceramic process and those who have worked in clay before.

Using the Potter's Wheel and Advanced Hand-Building Techniques for Raku Firing

August 8 - 12, 2022

For campers entering grades 9-12
COMMUTER CAMP - GREEN BAY CAMPUS 

Learn the secrets of throwing on the potter's wheel from professional ceramist, Dean Hoegger. Create advanced forms such as lidded vessels, section pots, and altered wheel-thrown pieces guided by this gifted instructor as you learn the wheel-throwing process and hand building methods to create larger pots and sculptural forms. Raku firing, the use of fire and smoke to achieve dramatic glazing effects, will inspire you as you become part of this time-honored tradition. This intensive workshop welcomes novice and experienced campers alike. You'll love the results!

​Our camp Health Forms are electronic!  You will receive an e-mail closer to camp that will prompt you to fill out your Health Form online.  Health Forms must be filled out online before your camper checks-in to camp.

General Camp Policies

We look forward to working with you and making sure that you have a fun, safe, exciting experience! Certain policies have been developed in order to assure your safety and well-being. The camp reserves the right, upon notification of parents/guardians to dismiss any camper during any session for improper dress, conduct, language, or attitude which, in the judgment of the administrative or counseling staff, is deemed detrimental to the other campers or smooth operation of the camp. If in the judgment of the administrative or counseling staff, your conduct violates any rules and regulations, you may be dismissed without refund of fees and/or referred to appropriate authorities.

Health Services and Insurance

The UW-Green Bay Health and Counseling Center is closed during the summer. Therefore, parents/guardians will be notified of any suspected or known illness or injury. Accident insurance through the University of Wisconsin is provided for all camps. This limited policy covers injuries relating to camp accidents only. It is understood that medical costs in excess of camp insurance will be borne by parents or guardians.

Cancellation Policy

Cancellations can be made up to 2 weeks prior to the start of camp. A $25 administrative fee is charged for all cancellations, the remainder will be refunded to you. No cancellations or refunds are available with less than two weeks notice. If camper must cancel for medical reasons, including COVID-19, full refunds are provided. To cancel, please call 920-465-2775 or email camps@uwgb.edu.

In the event a camper requests to switch camp sessions, an additional $25 processing fee will be applied.

We reserve the right to cancel any camp due to low enrollment; in such a case, all fees paid will be refunded or the camper can choose to apply fees to a different camp/class in the same year.

Overpayments of less than $10 will not be refunded.

Instructor
Dean Hoegger

Dean HoeggerCeramics instructor, Dean Hoegger, loves to say, "Yes!" He understands the therapeutic value of working with clay and encourages his students to explore this medium while discovering their creative talents. He fully supports the exploratory ideas of his students and mentors their independence, helping them find new ways to grow as artists. "Yes" will also become your favorite word after you've worked with this gifted and giving instructor. Hoegger brings many significant experiences to his Summer Art Studio classes. As a professional artist, he has exhibited throughout the Midwest for over forty years. His recent clay work ranges from wheel-thrown porcelain vessels to hand-built Raku sculpture. At times, he gears up his studio for creating large, wheel thrown floor-sized vessels. Beside exhibiting his work in local art galleries, Hoegger is a yearly participant in the downtown Green Bay arts festival, Art Street.
