Fall/Winter Ceremony Details for Graduates

The University of Wisconsin-Green Bay's Fall/Winter Commencement ceremony will be held at 11:30 a.m., Saturday, December 15, 2018, in the Weidner Center for the Performing Arts. The ceremony is approximately 1 1/2 hours in length. If you expect to earn your degree in December or January, this is the ceremony you should participate in. If you expect to earn your degree in May or August, you should participate in the spring/summer ceremony. Rare exceptions must be approved by the Associate Provost/Commencement Coordinator, Clifton Ganyard, via email.

In order to participate in the ceremony, you must sign up online by midnight on December 6, 2018. If you apply to graduate by November 16, your name will also be included in the program booklet, regardless of ceremony participation. To participate, go to www.uwgb.edu/sis. Log in as you normally do, select Academics, then Edit Graduation Information (or Apply for Graduation, if you haven't done so yet). After all the fields are complete, click on SAVE at the bottom and then GRADUATION CONFIRMATION.

Caps and Gowns

University of Wisconsin policy requires the wearing of approved caps and gowns at commencement exercises. (Please review the Commencement Apparel and Regalia Policy.) You may purchase your cap and gown at the Phoenix Bookstore, located in the University Union, beginning November 7, 2018.  Online purchases will be available beginning November 8. Particular sizes are only guaranteed through November 30, though purchases are available through December 14.

Honor Cords

Students who are eligible will be recognized at the ceremony with academic honor cords. The cords will be distributed with the guest tickets at the Graduation Resource Fair on November 7 and in the Office of the Provost, Cofrin Library Suite 835 beginning the following day.


Tickets are required for all guests, regardless of age or size. This is to comply with a safety requirement to assure an accurate building occupancy count in case of an emergency. Based on seating capacity at The Weidner Center for the Performing Arts and class size, each graduate can request up to four complimentary admission tickets when registering to participate in the ceremony (guaranteed). You may also request up to two extra tickets (not guaranteed). Because seating is limited, please request only the number of tickets you need.

Tickets become available starting November 7, 2018 at the Graduation Resource Fair and in the Office of the Provost, Cofrin Library Suite 835 beginning the following day. All guaranteed tickets requested MUST be picked up no later than noon on Friday, December 7. Unclaimed tickets will be distributed on December 11-14 from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. only to students who pre-registered for extras. Any remaining tickets will be available on a first-come-first-served basis the morning of the ceremony at the Information/Program table in the Weidner Center foyer. Although we can't guarantee tickets for all of your guests, we do encourage their attendance. The ceremony will be running on closed-circuit monitors in the lobbies on all levels of the Weidner Center for guests without tickets, and there will be limited seating there. It will also be live streamed on the campus website, so please keep these options in mind.

For our special needs guests, handicapped parking is available in the Weidner Center parking lot, and wheelchair accessible seating is available. An usher will seat your guest(s) in the designated area upon arrival. The Weidner Center has accessible seating on all levels and there is an elevator.

Graduation Day

Robing and assembly will take place in Studio One and Fort Howard Hall, and the processional will lead into the Cofrin Family Hall. There will be signs directing you where to go. The front doors to the Weidner Center for the Performing Arts will open at 10:00 a.m., as will the Cofrin Family Hall (main seating area) for guest seating. Plan to arrive in your assigned room no later than 10:30 a.m. in order to robe and be ready for the assembly. Please note: Due to limited space, guests are not allowed in the assembly area.

Graduate Robing and Processional

Student marshals and volunteer staff will assist you with robing and finding your chair. Graduates line up alphabetically within the college and major (see order of diploma presentations). A name announcement card will be taped to your assigned chair in the appropriate assembly area. YOU WILL NEED TO TAKE THIS WITH YOU TO THE CEREMONY.

We cannot guarantee the security of any personal items, so do not leave any valuables in the assembly area during the ceremony.

Please be robed and in your seat no later than 10:45 for a lineup count and final instructions. Anyone not seated at this time will be placed at the end of the processional - NO EXCEPTIONS! As there will be no rehearsal, it is very important that you understand and follow the instructions. After checking your robing room assignment, please read the processional instructions for Fort Howard Hall or Studio One prior to December 15. The processional begins from Studio One then Fort Howard Hall at 11:15 sharp and proceeds to Cofrin Family Hall.


Follow the lead of the student marshals during the processional. When you arrive at your chair in Cofrin Family Hall, remain standing until the Chancellor gives the cue to sit down.

Three categories of degrees are awarded: Master's, Associate of Arts and Sciences, and Bachelor's degrees. Following a certain amount of pomp and circumstance, the Chancellor will call graduates in the degree categories to the platform to receive their diplomas.

Bachelor's degree and associate degree candidates: Tassels are worn on the right side of your cap until directed to switch.

Master’s degree candidates: Tassels are worn on the left side for the duration of the ceremony. You'll carry your hoods to the stage and be hooded by the Director of Graduate Studies and your major professor.

Student marshals will direct you through the ceremony. Degrees will be presented and conferred by college, following a brief presentation by the dean. As you approach the stage, hand your name announcement card to the announcer. You will receive your diploma from the Chancellor and shake his hand, walk across the stage and shake hands with your dean and program chair or representative, and proceed to the end to have your photo taken (see photography note below). A student marshal will then direct you back to your chair.


After the faculty and staff have recessed, the class speaker will say a few words, then the student marshals will lead graduates to alternating exits leading to the main lobby. You'll be greeted by the Alumni Association on your way out, and your guests will join you in the lobby after the recessional.

General Information

  • The commencement ceremony is approximately 1 1/2 hours in length.
  • Your ankles and feet will be visible beneath your robe, so please wear appropriate footwear. If you have any mobility issues, please contact us as soon as possible and we will make appropriate arrangements for you.
  • We have contracted with Empire Photography to take your picture as you approach the stage, as you receive your diploma, and a posed shot in front of a backdrop at the end of the stage.
  • Pre-event registration will ensure the link to your proofs will be sent 24-48 hours after the ceremony to the address you provide. Print orders placed through the website are shipped 7-10 days after ordering.
  • Please inform your guests taking pictures that the aisles must be kept clear during the ceremony, and to please be courteous when taking pictures either in the auditorium or the lobby. There will be a family photo area with a backdrop located in the grand foyer.
  • The commencement ceremony will be broadcast via live video streaming.
  • The ceremony will also be electronically recorded. DVD's will be available for purchase by emailing the campus Client Services or calling them at (920) 465-2416.
