Placement in English Composition

Most UW-Green Bay students are placed into an English Composition class based on their score on the English portion of the ACT exam.

I received an ACT English score of 16 or lower or an SAT I Verbal/Critical Reading score of 440 or lower.
  • You will be placed in Fundamentals of Writing (English Composition 093), a basic writing course that does not count for degree credits.
  • After passing this course, you will take College Writing (English Composition 100) to satisfy the UW-Green Bay English competency requirement.

I received an ACT English score of 17 to 24 or an SAT I Verbal/Critical Reading score of 450 to 580.
  • You will be placed in College Writing (English Composition 100), a course that all UW-Green Bay students must complete or test out of in order to satisfy the UW-Green Bay competency requirement.
  • This course must be completed by the end of the student’s second semester at UW-Green Bay.

I received an ACT English score of 25 to 31 or an SAT I Verbal/Critical Reading score of 590 to 750.
  • You have satisfied the UW-Green Bay English competency requirement, and you do not need to enroll in College Writing (English Composition 100)
  • You are eligible to enroll in Expository Writing (English Composition 105), a required course for many majors and minors.

I received an ACT English score of 32 or higher or an SAT I Verbal/Critical Reading score of 760 or higher.
  • You have satisfied the UW-Green Bay English competency requirement, and, although you are eligible to enroll in Expository Writing (English Composition 105), you may receive a waiver from the Expository Writing requirement for the following majors or minors: accounting, business administration, English, and human biology.
