Working Remotely

How to Connect with VPN Software (By Device Type)

While off-campus, faculty and staff can use the Virtual Private Network (VPN) software to connect to the university VPN. This will allow you to securely access UWGB network files and remote into your office computer. VPN software is preinstalled on UWGB laptops. If you use a personal PC (Windows or macOS), the VPN software will need to be installed. See below for more details.

VPN Software Use by Device Type

UWGB Windows & Mac Laptops - Laptop VPN software is preinstalled
Before using the preinstalled VPN software off-campus, EACH USER must log onto the laptop while it is still on campus. This step will create a user profile on the laptop.

Remoting into Your Office Computer

You can use the Remote Desktop Connection app to securely connect to your work computer from home and access all your programs, files, and network resources. Making this connection allows you to use your office computer as though you were using it from the office. A VPN connection is required to use the Remote Desktop Connection app. The Remote Desktop Connection app can only be used to remote into a Windows 10 office PC. Remoting into an office macOS device is not supported.

You must be added as a Remote User on your office computer. Please send your office computer GB number to the IT Service Desk to be set up. Computers must be powered on and not asleep in order to connect to them. If you need help accessing your work computer or you need your work computer powered on, please contact the IT Service Desk.

Remote Meetings, Voice Calls and Collaboration Tools

A variety of tools can be used to schedule remote meetings. Use this guide to select the right tool for your remote meeting: https://uknowit.uwgb.edu/99903.

Brief descriptions of how to use Microsoft Teams, Cisco Jabber, and Conference Now are included below.

Microsoft Teams

Purpose: Microsoft Teams is a chat-based collaboration tool that provides dispersed teams. Microsoft allows your teams to work together and share information in a common space. To start using Microsoft Teams, log into the Office 365 portal with your credentials and look for Teams under the list of add-ins. The Teams app can also be downloaded and used as an app on your PC.

Features: View your calendar; schedule meetings; make voice or video calls; chat with colleagues; collaborate as a team; access, share, and edit documents (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) in a shared location.

Cisco Jabber

Purpose: Cisco Jabber is used to associate a UWGB phone extension with a mobile phone and/or Windows 10 computer.

How it works: Inbound calls to a UWGB phone extension will ring on a Jabber Client installed on a mobile device and/or a Windows 10 computer. All outbound calls made from a Jabber client are identified as a UWGB phone extension. Multiple extensions can be tied to the same mobile phone and/or Windows 10 computer. Jabber calls can be voice or video calls.

Contact the IT Service Desk to setup your UWGB extension in Jabber and assign your phone extension to a mobile device and/or to a Windows 10 computer.

Changing Your Password: Helpful Reminders

If you have a university-owned PC or macOS device, use the Change Password function on your device to change your password. Follow these instructions for your next password reset: https://uknowit.uwgb.edu/22632. After a password reset, applications such as VPN, Jabber, Outlook, Teams, and OneDrive will prompt you to enter your new password.

If you do not have a university-owned PC or macOS device, use the Microsoft Self-Service Password Reset Tool (SSPR) to change your password; this tool can also be used if you've forgotten your password.

It is strongly recommended you set up authentication methods in SSPR prior to your next password reset. To add your authentication methods, follow this link: https://aka.ms/ssprsetup. For instructions, see the following KB: https://uknowit.uwgb.edu/106177.
