Eric Nicolaus, '07
Major / Minor: Accounting/Finance
Job Title: Senior Tax Analyst
Why did you choose to go into your program of study?
I took a basic Accounting class in High School and found out I was able to understand the concepts fairly easily and I enjoyed the class.
When you began at UW-Green Bay, what did you expect for your future?
I knew I wanted to become a Certified Public Accountant but I was unsure as to whether I would work in the public or private sector.
Did you have a job/internship in your field while going to college that helped spark your interest?
Yes, I did have a tax internship with Integrys starting in the middle of my fourth year at UWGB. This internship helped me decide that working in the public sector was for me and Integrys also offered me a full-time position at the beginning of my fifth year at UWGB.
What were you involved in while a student at UW-Green Bay?
I was a member of the Accounting Students Association while at UWGB. I found this to be a great way to network with potential employers as well as my peers.
Where are you currently employed? Please describe your position.
I am still with Integrys. My title now is a Senior Tax Analyst. I perform a broad range of diversified tax and accounting assignments, which regularly include responsibility for the most difficult kinds of tax work, demonstrating sound knowledge of financial accounting rules, and tax law and regulation.
How do you keep in contact with other alumni?
Currently I keep in contact with other alumni thru social media (Facebook and Twitter).
What advice would you have for a student wanting to enter your field?
My one piece of advice would be not to underestimate the value of computer programming concepts. In our field of work I have found that is not only important to understand what the correct accounting answer is but you also need to be able to have the accounting program you are working in calculate and produce that same answer. Computer systems are a very important part of our everyday work and any knowledge you can gain in that area will only help you progress in your career.
Can we share your e-mail address on our website/can career services give it out to students inquiring about a job in your place of employment/field?
Career services can give my e-mail address out to students inquiring about an accounting position at Integrys.
