Alana Renier, '07
Major / Minor: Accounting/Business Administration
Job Title: Supervisor - Corporate Accounting
Why did you choose to go into your program of study?
I chose to enter the field of accounting when I took my first accounting class at UWGB. My professor was very engaging and gave the class examples from his real world accounting experience that really grabbed my attention.
When you began at UW-Green Bay, what did you expect for your future?
When I began at UWGB, I didn't have a definite career path, but I was able to narrow down my options very quickly when I found the classes and topics I enjoyed most in college and paired that knowledge with information on job opportunities in that field. I was drawn to accounting because the skill set is needed in every operation, public, private, and non-profit.
Did you have a job/internship in your field while going to college that helped spark your interest?
I had an internship at my current employer, Integrys Energy Group. An internship was an amazing opportunity to ensure that accounting was the correct career path for me by getting experience that was similar to an entry-level position in my field. I was fortunate enough to be hired on after graduation at Integrys, another great benefit of internships. While I was an intern, I got to assist with the accounting for a major construction project and I very much enjoyed the responsibility I was given and the people I worked with, making both an accounting major and a position at Integrys after graduation an easy decision.
What were you involved in while a student at UW-Green Bay?
While I was at UWGB, I was an ASA member in addition to completing 2 years at an Accounting internship. I found that my classmates and coworkers were great contacts in regards to understanding future career paths and the process to getting a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) certification.
Where are you currently employed? Please describe your position.
I am currently employed at Integrys Energy Group as a supervisor in the Corporate Accounting area. I oversee the preparation of the consolidated Statement of Cash Flows and Statement of Shareholders' Equity as well as prepare and review reports and information provided to the Board of Directors, calculating certain pay-at-risk performance metrics, overseeing certain state regulatory reporting, and reviewing accounting for our compressed natural gas (CNG) business.
How do you keep in contact with other alumni?
I see a fair number of alumni at my job on a regular basis. Integrys' accounting department has quite a few UWGB alumni! Additionally, I am a member of the campus recruiting team for Integrys, allowing me to come back to campus at least twice a year and connect with alumni and professors. Otherwise, I utilize Facebook to keep in contact.
What advice would you have for a student wanting to enter your field?
Get an internship! Internships not only give you experience to add to your resume that will greatly assist in a full-time job search, you also get to try out the field and company to ensure that both are a good fit for you before you are too far along in your college or full-time working career. It was an easy transition from college to a full-time job knowing the company and type of work I would be doing was a great fit for me.
