0100D - Best Practices in Instruction for Initial Teachers

This course is open to newly hired teachers in the Plymouth School District.

Course Description:

This class is designed to help new teachers develop skills and knowledge that will increase their success in the classroom. It will help beginning teachers to gain deeper understanding of five areas. In the area of lesson design, participants will learn the significance of clear learning targets and the use of curricular documents in creating lessons. The second area will be in assessment where participants will learn effective assessment techniques and build their skills by designing formative and summative assessments. The third area will be in differentiation where participants will learn why it is necessary to include and differentiate for all students. The fourth area of focus will be communication where participants will learn and practice techniques for effective communication with students and parents, as an integral member of the professional school, and with the local community. Lastly, participants will learn what technology is available and begin to integrate various technologies into lessons and assessments.

  • Course Number: ED & HUD 795-6, section 7422 (#0100D)

  • Prerequisite: Graduate Standing (Must have earned a bachelor’s degree). All newly hired teachers in the Plymouth School District are eligible to enroll; others interested in enrolling need to contact Pam Harney at paharney@plymouth.k12.wi.us or 920-893-6911.

  • Schedule: Monday through Thursday, August 19-22 (8:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m.), and Friday, August 23, 2013 (8:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m.). Requirements include completion of a formal lesson plan that will be implemented in the classroom and observed by the course instructor or building administrator (to be scheduled individually); and completion of a monthly reflection log through February 2014. All assignments for this course will be completed by March 1, 2014.
    (The official course start and end dates for fee and grade reporting purposes are August 19, 2013 to March 18, 2014.)
