About Donald Harden

Donald HardenDr. Harden, served on the University faculty and administration from 1970 until 1994. As chief student services officer throughout the University's early years, he built and guided many of the original student support operations. From the community perspective, Dr. Harden’s most far-reaching contributions were as the engineer of programs and projects that forged bonds between the new University and the region's civic establishment and general public. His accomplishments included fostering growth of the Founders Association, leading the University's move to Division I athletics, and creating the Phoenix Fund. He involved community leaders in projects to enrich student life through the construction of residence halls and to enhance cultural life for the campus and all Northeast Wisconsin through major gifts and fund raising for construction of the Weidner Center for the Performing Arts.

Many of Dr. Harden's most fruitful efforts to build campus-community partnerships resulted from alliances he made during countless evenings and weekends of volunteer service off campus. His leadership roles have ranged from the Chamber of Commerce to youth, health, symphony and museum organizations. In 1987, he led Brown County's United Way to its first campaign ever to exceed $2 million. His corporate directorships have included Firstar Bank of Green Bay, the Morley Murphy Company and TNT Crust, Inc. Dr. Harden is a past Chairman of the Board of Bellin Health and former member of the Executive Committee of the Green Bay Packers.

Following graduation from Michigan State University and service as a U.S. Air Force navigator, he worked in management with General Motors Corporation; Lansing, Mich. Dr. Harden began his professional career in higher education as Director of Housing and Counselor to Men at Alma College. He later served as Assistant Director of Placement and as an Instructor in the College of Education at Michigan State University and as Assistant Dean, Assistant Professor and Secretary of the Faculty at MSU's innovative residential school, Lyman Briggs College.

Dr. Harden came to UW-Green Bay as the Assistant Chancellor for Student Services. He was a charter inductee in the University's Phoenix Hall of Fame in 1993. Dr. Harden completed his academic career as the University's Associate Chancellor, holding the rank of full professor.
