Research:
Traumatic brain injury (TBI) results in greater than 2 million emergency room visits annually in the United States. However, many mild TBI events, including concussions, go unreported. Both severe TBI and repetitive mild TBI are associated with neurodegenerative disease. However, mild TBI events are challenging to study given the available animal models. The Brusich lab has expanded the use of a TBI paradigm in fruit flies to study mild to severe TBI events in isolation or upon repetitive injury. The lab is now working to determine mechanisms responsible for differences in phenotypic outcomes in response to various TBI protocols.
