REQUIREMENTS FOR DIETETIC INTERNSHIP

For selection into the Internship, applicants must have:

  • A master’s degree from an accredited college or university.
  • A verification statement of completion from an ACEND accredited Didactic Program in Nutrition and Dietetics.
  • A minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0 and 3.0 for professional courses (4.0 basis); recommended science grades of a C or better.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills in English.

Preferred Qualifications

Demonstrated ability (as evidenced by the letters of recommendations and personal statement): To work effectively as a member of a team, as well as team leader To be a self-directed and independent learner, and To be flexible and enthusiastic. Work and/or volunteer experience related to health care, community and/or food service encouraged.

Please follow all directions carefully as an incomplete application cannot be considered. Completed application and all supporting documents must be submitted by February 15, 2024, for the Fall 2024 admission.

Complete Student Application through Dietetic Internship Centralized Application System (DICAS). This online application must be completed in its entirety by February 15, 2024.

Include the following in your application:

  1. DICAS Application Fee: the fee to use DICAS is $50.00 for the first application submitted and $25.00 for each additional internship application.
  2. UW-Green Bay Dietetic Internship Application Fee: $60.00 (non-refundable) application fee to UW-Green Bay. Make check/money order payable to UW-Green Bay. Mail directly to: UW-Green Bay, Dietetic Internship, 2420 Nicolet Drive LS 455, Green Bay, WI 54311. Please make sure the applicant’s full name is included with the check/money order.
  3. Personal Statement: Applicants who apply to internship using DICAS are asked to complete a personal statement limited to 8,000 characters (approximately 1,000 words). In your personal statement for the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay address a minimum of three of the following items in your statement:
    1. Why do you want to enter the dietetics profession?
    2. Discuss experiences that have helped prepare you for your career?
    3. What you’re your short-term and long-term goals?
    4. What are your strengths and areas needing improvement?
    5. What other information do you consider important for the selection process?
  4. Letters of Recommendation: Applicants must submit 3 letters of recommendation from faculty, academic advisors, employers, or other individuals who have supervised your academic studies or work experience. As least one recommendation should come from an employer who supervised your volunteer or work experience and one from and instructor of a course you took within nutrition and dietetics. All recommendations will be submitted electronically through DICAS. Applicants must include the name and contact information (specifically an e-mail address) for each of their 3 references. This will trigger an email message requestions completion of a reference form. The form will be completed electronically. Students submitting more than one applicant will need to use the same individuals as references for each application.
  5. Verification Statement: An official statement of Verification of Completion of the Didactic Program in Nutrition and Dietetics (DPD) with original signatures, or Declaration of Intent to complete academic requirements, also with original signatures, is required. Once you submit the online DICAS application, the DP Director will be notified, and a verification or declaration of intent will be automatically processed.
  6. Official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended: When applying online, applicants will be asked to download and fill out a Transcript Request Form which applicants should then send to the Registrar of each institution. The Registrar will send the official transcript directly to DICAS. Note, this includes two year colleges, online colleges and/or any academic institution from which you have received a post-secondary grade.
  7. Digital Matching: Applicants must register online with D&D Digital at https://www.dnddigital.com/, pay the $65.00 computer match fee and enter their contact information and dietetic internship preference by the due date.

Selection Criteria for Dietetic Internship

Your application to the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay Dietetic Internship Program requires successful completion of The Academy's Didactic Program in Dietetics (DPD) requirements and fulfillment of the application process listed on this page.

Interns are selected based on:

  • Academic achievement
  • Conceptual ability
  • Written and oral communication
  • Work experience
  • Professional activities
  • Leadership abilities
  • Professional references
  • GRE scores (not required but recommended) 

It is ideal that the personal narrative reflects these abilities and qualities. In the past, the students selected typically have a high GPA or GRE score as well as a broad range of experiences in all areas of dietetics. These areas include: community nutrition, food service, and clinical work supporting patients. Should you need guidance on how to apply or discuss if an internship is right for you, please feel free to reach out to your Undergraduate Director or the Internship Director to assist you in your career decision making process.

DICAS Application Information

Below are suggestions regarding the DICAS application process. 

  • You can navigate to the DICAS system. You will need to create a new account if you have not already set one up.
  • When logged in, please note that there are instructions for every section at the top right hand corner of each page.
  • In the College(s) Attended section, after you have added your schools, click the orange button to the left of your school listing to obtain a transcript form. Send a separate transcript request form to each school you have added.
  • You can only request 3 letters of recommendation through the DICAS website. UW-Green Bay Dietetic Internship requires 3 letters.

Computer Matching Info and Deadline

Complete the computer matching instructions for D&D Digital Systems (515-292-0490) as described on the link. The application deadline is February 15, 2024. Applicant match notification is April 4, 2024.

Health Requirements Upon Acceptance

Students must submit the following health records and information AND MAKE SURE THEY ARE CURRENT FOR THE ENTIRE INTERNSHIP YEAR (June 1st of the current year to June 1st of the next year, i.e. 6/1/2024-6/1/2025).

  • A physician signed health/physical examination within six months prior to start of internship with official records and dates of all vaccinations and immunizations, including:
    • Two doses of the MMR vaccine to prove immunity to measles, mumps, and rubella
    • Proof of immunity to chicken pox (a titer is required if you have had chicken pox) or 2 vaccinations
    • TB skin test (step 1 & 2) which will be valid through the completion of the program (some rotations require additional)
    • Tetanus immunization within the past 10 years.
    • Flu shot for current season
    • Drug Test - 10 panel
    • Hepatitis B - Three shot series. A titer is recommended to show immunity.
    • COVID-19 vaccine is highly recommended but not mandatory.

Criminal Background Checks for Interns:

The state of Wisconsin has a law requiring a stringent check of the backgrounds of persons who provide care for others. The background check is mandatory for all persons who are employed in the care-giving industry and also applies to students, including dietetic interns, who are assigned to healthcare facilities for supervised practice. The required background check includes a criminal records check and could exclude someone from working in facilities where direct patient/client contact and care is provided if a history of any of crimes or charges for homicides, sexual assault, abuse or arson is found.

Therefore, it is necessary to complete a detailed disclosure form and pay the processing fee of $25.00 to $65.00, if accepted to the Dietetic Internship. It is also required to complete background checks in every state resided within the last seven years. You should also be aware that if the results of the background check reveal any of the offenses noted above, you would not be able to participate in the Internship, except through an appeals process.

Some locations do require an additional background check. If this is the case for your rotation, you will be informed. The facility typically covers the cost.

Professional Liability Insurance Upon Acceptance:

All interns are required to purchase $1,000,000.00 for occurrence, $5,000,000.00 aggregate in additional liability insurance. It is the responsibility of each intern. Approximate cost: $25-$35

CPR Certification

Current valid American Heart Association Healthcare Provider (BLS) CPR certification that is valid THROUGHOUT internship year is required.
