Medical Insurance

The University of Wisconsin System offers group health, dental, vision and long-term care insurance options to help fit the individual needs of its employees and the employee’s family. You decide which plans are best for you and your family.

State Group Health Insurance

The UW provides comprehensive health and basic dental insurance throughout Wisconsin to employees and their families. Health plans offered include Health Maintenance Organizations (HMOs) and Preferred Provider Organizations (PPOs). If you need coverage outside of Wisconsin, there is one plan that has a network of preferred providers available across Wisconsin and the nation.

Additional Resources

Delta Dental

Delta Dental administers both our Uniform Dental Benefits as well as our Supplemental Dental Benefits.
Uniform Dental Benefits: Uniform Dental provides coverage for diagnostic, preventative and restorative services (such as fillings).  The Uniform Dental benefit is only available if you enroll in the State Group Health Insurance program.  Uniform Dental does not include coverage for major dental services, such as crowns, root canals or implants.  If you want coverage for major dental services, you could consider enrolling in one of the supplemental dental plans.
Supplemental Dental Benefits: There are two supplemental dental plans available however you may only enroll in one of them.  The primary differences between the two plans are the provider networks, premium cost, annual maximums and whether orthodontia is covered.  Both plans provide coverage for major services, such as crowns or implants, but do not cover preventative or basic services, such as cleanings and fillings.
Supplemental Dental Plan Options:

  • PPO - Select
  • PPO Plus Premier - Select Plus

VSP Vision Insurance

VSP Vision Insurance provides coverage for annual eye exams, frames, lenses and contact lenses. VSP also provides discounted refractive eye surgery at select locations.

Long-Term Care Insurance

Long-Term Care Insurance covers services that are typically not covered by health insurance, such as assistance with activities of daily living (e.g. walking, eating, bathing). This plan provides financial protection from the rising costs of long-term care. Coverage for care in non-institutional settings, such as assisted living, adult day care, and in-home care, is also available.

Federal Health Insurance Marketplace

The Federal Health Insurance Marketplace, or Exchange, is an option for people to obtain health insurance.  If you have State Group Health Insurance coverage through your UW employment, you do not need to enroll through the Marketplace or take any action, unless you choose to do so.  You may want to review the plans available through the Marketplace to see if they may better suit your needs.  Additional information regarding the Marketplace can be found in the Notice of Health Insurance Marketplace.
