Position Information

Working Title:  Advising and Recruitment Specialist

Essential Job Functions

This position reports to the Director of Advising and promotes and supports the philosophy and mission of the Enrollment Services Division, and works at the Manitowoc campus. In support of the University's enrollment, retention and graduation goals, establishes and administers programs for recruiting students to University undergraduate programs. Independently represents the institution to targeted constituencies and/or territories. Develops and maintains relationships with identified partners within the institution and community. Strategizes on opportunities to enhance recruitment efforts and implements identified strategies. Supports Enrollment Services Division and university-wide initiatives related to the student learning experience and academic success. Advises students on academic programs and requirements relevant to their academic and career development.

This position includes the following responsibilities:

  • Advise students on general education, supporting courses for majors and minors, and rules, regulations, policies and procedures.
  • Counsel students with regard to major/career goal setting and academic planning.
  • Provide social, cultural and leadership workshops and activities for students.
  • Guide and support student’s development of self-advocacy and institutional navigation skills of on and off campus resources.
  • Develop and coordinate First Year Focus programs to orient and enroll new and continuing students to the campus.
  • Assist with special event planning related to academic advising such as Majors Fair and Registration and Resources Advising.
  • Review credit evaluations to determine assignment of transfer courses to General Education requirements.
  • Advise and instruct students and staff on the use and application of the Student Information System, the Transfer Information System (TIS) and other website resources.
  • Serve as the campus contact for Accessibility Services; provide students with appropriate resources and paperwork.
  • Facilitate program and college admissions presentations and financial aid workshops, and enrollment confirmation information to prospective students.
  • Create and implement focused programming to improve first year retention. Development retention interventions to help students transition from first year to second year.
  • Serve as liaison to community agencies, organizations, and non-profit programs within the service area and beyond, to establish an extensive networking source for the purpose of identifying prospective students and accessing resources for migrant students.
  • Assist in student outreach and workshops/conferences.
  • Represent the campus and university at fairs, middle school and high school events, or other relevant outreach events as needed.


  • Bachelor's degree at time of application
  • 2 - 3 years working in higher education
  • Experience in areas related to college, pre-collegiate, college advising, and/or retention, post-secondary academic advising and/or student academic services.

  • Master's degree
  • Relevant experience in academic advising

Conditions Of Appointment

Position is a full-time (100%) Academic Staff appointment.  Official transcripts of the highest degree achieved will be required of finalist(s). A criminal conviction investigation will be conducted on the finalist(s). Salary range of $41,000 - $46,000

This position is exempt from the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).

The UW System provides an excellent benefits package, including participation in the Wisconsin State Retirement System.
