Essential Job Functions

This position reports to the Controller and provides leadership and guidance in all aspects of financial management, including non-profit, partnership and corporate accounting, regulatory and financial reporting, budget and forecasts preparation, as well as development of internal control policies and procedures.

This position is responsible for coordinating the overall management of campus accounting services and performs the highest level of accounting activities.  This position will function as the campus Assistant Controller. The position has administrative responsibility for the following business functions:  Accounts Payable & Non Student Accounts Receivable, Cash Management, Grants & Contracts Accounting, General Ledger Accounting and Capital Equipment Inventory, and Financial Reporting to include hiring of staff, staff development and training, performance evaluation, implementation of corrective measures as deemed appropriate, and cross training within departments and across functional lines.

This position includes the following responsibilities:

  • Assist with management of all accounting operations including Billing, A/R, A/P; supervises accounts receivable, accounts payable and general accounting operations and departments. 
  • Develops and documents business processes and accounting policies to maintain and strengthen internal controls; ensures quality control over financial transactions and financial reporting.
  • Manages and complies with local, state, and federal government reporting requirements and tax filings.
  • Coordinates and assists with the preparation of regulatory reporting including annual and periodic program review audit.


  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or related field at time of application 
  • 7 years of professional accounting experience
  • Demonstrated ability in applying Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP)
  • Working knowledge of Generally Accepted Auditing Standards (GAAS)
  • Working knowledge of government and financial reporting principles 
  • Working knowledge of automated accounting system processes and operations 
  • Current experience using financial software packages (e.g. PeopleSoft)
  • Supervisory experience 
  • Proficient in creating complex spreadsheet and word processing

  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA)
  • Experience in a higher education environment

Conditions Of Appointment

Position is a full-time Academic Staff appointment.  Official transcripts of the highest degree achieved will be required of finalist(s). A criminal conviction investigation will be conducted on the finalist(s). Salary range of $75,000 - $80,000.

This position is exempt from the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).


The UW System provides an excellent benefits package to meet the diverse needs of its employees. This includes several health insurance options, with annual deductibles as low as $250/individual and $500/family. Our benefits package also includes dental, vision, several life insurance options, AD&D and Accident insurance and Flexible Spending and Health Savings Accounts. We participate in the Wisconsin Retirement System (WRS), where employer contributions begin immediately and employees are fully vested after 5 years of service. The UW System also provides supplemental retirement savings programs including a 403(b) and Deferred Compensation.

In addition, employees receive several types of paid leave benefits, which are prorated for employees working less than 100%. This includes 9 legal holidays, 36 hours of personal holiday and between 96-130 hours of sick leave annually. Employees earn 13-27 days of vacation each year, depending on years of service and employment type.
