Position Information

Title:  Custodian Lead

Essential Job Functions

This position reports to the Physical Plant Program Manager on the Sheboygan Campus and is responsible for relaying instructions from supervisors to the custodial staff. This position must exhibit high standards in performing job duties, clean assigned areas according to department standards, and be able to organize job duties to fit time allowed. Excellent customer services is necessary in order to interact with outside constituencies. This position must be physically able to perform all aspects of the job duties, able to read and comprehend written instructions, write instructions for custodial staff, use and learn to use all department equipment according to instructions, follow all safety rules, and report safety violations or equipment repairs to supervisor.

This position includes the following responsibilities:
  • Clean offices, windows, furniture, restrooms, and other building areas.
  • Maintain all floor surfaces including mopping, buffing, vacuuming, shampooing, and refinishing.
  • Assist with furniture, piano, and equipment moves.
  • Remove waste and recycling.
  • Change and/or replace light bulbs.
  • Perform snow removal and salting of building entrances.
  • Plan and assign duties/tasks for custodial staff.
  • Inspect buildings for cleanliness and report any needed problems and/or repairs.
  • Maintain proper service schedule on all equipment.
  • Record keeping and inventory control.
  • Prepare equipment and products for use by Custodians.
  • Plan all arrangements for special event set-ups and requested moves.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • High School Diploma or equivalent at time of application
  • Possession of or eligibility to obtain a valid driver's license upon appointment
  • Physical abilities to lift 50 lbs. from the floor to waist occasionally
  • Physical abilities to lift 30 lbs. from the floor to overhead occasionally
  • Physical abilities to stand and walk continuously throughout an eight hour shift


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Knowledge of the proper methods, materials, and equipment for a wide range of general custodian work
  • Ability to operate cleaning equipment such as a vacuum cleaner or a floor scrubber
  • Knowledge of basic safety precautions including the safe and proper use of toxic chemicals, and knowledge of heaving lifting methods to ensure safety
  • Must have the ability to maintain high standards of cleanliness
  • Ability to perform basic computer functions including internet browsing and e-mail
  • Ability to tolerate temperature extremes when performing snow removal activities
  • Ability to push, pull, reach, bend, twist, stoop, kneel, move furniture, perform repetitive motions, overhead work, frequent stair and ladder climbing


The successful candidate will have exceptional oral, written, interpersonal, organizational, time-management, computer, proofreading, and customer service skills; the ability to communicate with diverse constituents; and the willingness to work independently, as well as part of a collaborative team. This position requires the ability to manage multiple deadlines, projects, and priorities with attention to detail and exceptional accuracy; show excellent judgment, including sensitivity to personal and confidential information; and demonstrate flexibility and the ability to adapt to ongoing change. Good work habits, such as attendance, punctuality, accountability, thoroughness, and resourcefulness, are essential for this position.

Conditions Of Appointment

Position is a full-time University Staff appointment.  The work hours for this position will be 7:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. 

A criminal conviction investigation and pre-work screen examination will be conducted on the finalist(s).  A six-month probationary period is required for this position. In compliance with the Wisconsin Fair Employment Act, the University does not discriminate on the basis of arrest or conviction record.

Salary

Hourly salary of $15.75. This position will earn an additional $0.60 per hour for all weekend hours worked and an additional $0.45 per hour for all hours worked between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m.

This position is not exempt from the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).
