Essential Job Functions

Reporting directly to the CIO and Associate Vice Chancellor for the Division of Information Technology, the Director of Infrastructure Services is a working director responsible for ensuring the stable, secure, and reliable operation of the University’s infrastructure services whether provided onsite or from an off-campus location (e.g. network, data center, telecommunications, system applications, etc.). This position provides overall tactical and operational leadership, directs the strategic design, acquisition, management, and implementation of enterprise-wide technology tools, directs daily operational activities, and provides solutions that enhance mission-critical operations of the IT department.

This position includes the following responsibilities:

  • Manage a team of technical professionals and vendors, providing day-to-day leadership, development, prioritization, coaching, and mentoring. Seek and provide opportunities to ensure they remain current with related skills, abilities, and technological advances.
  • Lead the operational and strategic planning for infrastructure services, including fostering innovation, planning projects, and organizing and negotiating the allocation of resources in partnership with the CIO. Ensure alignment with the Technology Plan and the institution’s strategic objectives.
  • Proactively manage work and communications to ensure that activities and projects are moving forward and consistently meeting or exceeding service level expectations
  • Coordinate and drive the business relationship with key internal partners and significant external partners.
  • Ensure a high level of customer service is consistently delivered to users, as defined and agreed upon with campus stakeholders.
  • Serve as hands-on project manager for all networking and infrastructure projects.
  • Lead the team in establishing and adhering to IT Service Management and project management best practices.
  • Source, replace, implement, support, and maintain architecture and systems (e.g., telecommunications, servers, operating systems, hardware, and software, etc.)
  • Partner with the Director of Technology Support Services to provide user-friendly information to the campus community to assist in maximizing the value of campus technologies and advance digital transformation.
  • Work closely and develop strong relationships with stakeholders from all levels of the organization, providing exceptional customer service in alignment with the institution’s technology plan and available resources.
  • Develop and maintain the budget and maintenance plan for IT infrastructure and systems in support of the institutional strategic plan. Accurately predict, plan, and track the expenses.
  • Source and outsource vendor services. Effectively manage vendor relationships.
  • Seek continuous quality improvements to eliminate gaps in system performance and streamline IT solution delivery and timing.
  • Participate in the development of the strategic information technology plan, processes, and solutions.
  • Other duties as required and/or assigned


  • Bachelor's degree in an applicable field or equivalent relevant experience
  • Three years of experience managing technical infrastructure projects to successful completion
  • Five years of successfully leading IT infrastructure support and a team of networking technical staff, including demonstrated effective people management skills to provide direction, set priorities, and deliver coaching to support talent development.
  • ITIL Foundations certified (or able to achieve within 6 months of hire)

  • Master's degree in a related field
  • Experience in a higher education environment
  • Experience developing and managing outsourced services and/or service providers
  • Additional ITIL certifications
  • CompTIA certification
  • CISSP certification (or similar)
  • Microsoft infrastructure certifications

Conditions Of Appointment

Some travel is required for necessary meetings, workshops, conferences, etc. Occasional evening and/or weekend work is expected as needed.

Position is a full-time Limited appointment.  Official transcripts of the highest degree achieved will be required of finalist(s).  A criminal conviction investigation will be conducted on the finalist(s).  In compliance with the Wisconsin Fair Employment Act, the university does not discriminate on the basis of arrest or conviction record.

Salary range of $90,000 - $110,000

This position is exempt from the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).


The UW System provides an excellent benefits package to meet the diverse needs of its employees. This includes several health insurance options, with annual deductibles as low as $250/individual and $500/family. Our benefits package also includes dental, vision, several life insurance options, AD&D and Accident insurance and Flexible Spending and Health Savings Accounts. We participate in the Wisconsin Retirement System (WRS), where employer contributions begin immediately and employees are fully vested after 5 years of service. The UW System also provides supplemental retirement savings programs including a 403(b) and Deferred Compensation.

In addition, employees receive several types of paid leave benefits, which are prorated for employees working less than 100%. This includes 9 legal holidays, 36 hours of personal holiday and between 96-130 hours of sick leave annually. Employees earn 13-27 days of vacation each year, depending on years of service and employment type.
