Position Information

UW System Title:  HVAC Mechanic

Essential Job Functions

This position reports to the Heat/Chill Supervisor and assists in carrying out the mission and philosophy of the Office of Residence Life at the University of Wisconsin Green Bay. This position is responsible for working collaboratively with others in providing services for a residential community, housing 2,200 students and 2,500 summer guests residing in 29 University housing facilities.

Primary responsibilities of this position include Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning, (HVAC)/Refrigeration equipment troubleshooting, adjusting, modifying, inspecting, maintaining, repairing, performing preventative maintenance and assisting with major installations of HVAC/R projects. This position will also assist with the repairs of mechanical, plumbing and electrical systems.

This position includes the following responsibilities:

  • Monitors, tests, maintains, and repairs Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems, related equipment, and controls according to established policies and procedures.

  • Receives, prioritizes, and responds to service requests according to established timelines and policies. 

  • Identifies, prioritizes, troubleshoots, and escalates system problems, equipment malfunctions, and repair needs.

  • Performs scheduled preventative and routine maintenance and documents activity on equipment and systems to ensure optimal and safe operation.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • High school diploma at time of application 
  • High degree of mechanical aptitude and/or working experience in the operation, maintenance, and/or repair of the electrical, plumbing, heating, refrigeration, air conditioning, kitchen equipment, laundry equipment, and/or other mechanical systems and apparatuses commonly used in university housing building complexes
  • Working knowledge of computerized HVAC systems, as well as mechanical systems
  • Extensive experience using various types of power and hand tools used in mechanical maintenance work
  • Experience with troubleshooting, monitoring, and resolving malfunctioning or unsafe conditions in Mechanical equipment
  • Completed safety training of occupational hazards and techniques required in the maintenance and use of building mechanical systems 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • 4 or more years in the HVAC or plumbing field


PHYSICAL QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Physical strength and stamina to perform required work, including being able to bend, stoop, kneel, climb, move furniture and appliances, lift up to 50 lbs, and work on feet for long periods of time
  • Ability to climb and work at considerable heights and in confined spaces under adverse conditions

Conditions Of Appointment

Position is a full-time University Staff appointment.  The work hours for this position will be 7:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. Occasional weekend and evening work is required to respond to facilities related emergencies.  

A criminal conviction investigation and pre-work screen examination will be conducted on the finalist(s).  A six-month probationary period is required for this position. Salary

Hourly salary of $25.00

This position will earn an additional $0.60 per hour for all weekend hours worked and an additional $0.45 per hour for all hours worked between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m.

This position is not exempt from the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).
