Position Information

Working Title:  IT Server Administrator
UW System Title:  Network Specialist

Essential Job Functions

This position reports to the Manager of Network and Infrastructure and is responsible for advanced problem solving, designing, implementing, administering, and documenting Microsoft Windows/Ubuntu servers, Active Directory, Azure, Office 365, VMWare, Enterprise Applications and the Storage Area Network.

This position includes the following responsibilities:

  • Provide engineering and advanced support of Windows Servers and appliances in a VMware environment (ESXi and vCenter).
  • Perform Active Directory /Azure AD user, group, and attribute administration.
  • Perform Microsoft IIS administration.
  • Request and install server certificates.
  • Perform file and resource optimization and maintenance activities.
  • Provide for the backup and recoverability of servers; restore VMs and user data.
  • Participate in Disaster recovery testing on a routine basis and update documentation.
  • Provide technical support (all-levels) to customers via phone, email, and through the ticketing system. Develop a rapport as a trusted resource for them.
  • Respond to service requests in a timely manner (meeting or exceeding our SLAs).
  • Administration of the Storage Area Network.
  • Implement and enforce IT security policies and procedures.
  • Perform account audits, log reviews, system file audits, patch audits, service audits and ports/protocol analysis on servers.
  • Configure and maintain print devices, queues, and printer security.
  • Create and maintain PowerShell scripts for systems automation.
  • Manage high visibility projects from inception to implementation.
  • Work with other system administrators, network administrators, UW-campuses, colleagues and information security to engineer solutions from design to implementation.
  • Research, recommend, and implement server and storage technologies.
  • Develop and maintain server documentation.
  • Develop and maintain inventory and asset documentation.
  • Periodically work after hours to implement system changes including patches, updates, migrations, etc., and provide support for events or emergencies.
  • Deploy, test and troubleshoot enterprise software applications.
  • Implement authentication services (such as ADFS and Shibboleth for SAML-based SSO) for various applications.
  • Upgrade, patch, maintain and troubleshoot enterprise applications.
  • Work with vendors, University departments and stakeholders to coordinate application installation and maintenance.
  • Establish and maintain excellent communication with vendors, University departments and stakeholders regarding project purchase, implementation and support.
  • Ensure high availability and peak performance of mission critical applications.
  • Create and maintain application installation and remediation documentation.
  • Communicate with others impending changes, planned/unplanned outages and progress of such.
  • Assist in other areas of the Division.
  • Attend seminars, workshops, and other training sessions to maintain proficiency with evolving information technology requirements and capabilities.
  • Occasional travel to branch campuses to perform related administration or support.


  • High School Diploma at time of application
  • One year of experience
  • Experience with administering virtual Microsoft Windows Servers (2012R2 through 2019) and the management, configuration, and deployment of VMs.
  • Experience with administering VMWare ESXi and vCenter
  • Experience with iSCSI-based Storage Area Network appliances
  • Understanding of LAN/WAN networking

  • Bachelor's Degree in a related field or three years of experience in an environment with >50 serves
  • Practical level of experience with network technologies
  • Experience with administering Microsoft Azure and Office 365
  • Experience with performance monitoring and analysis of network and server systems
  • Experience administering Linux/Ubuntu systems
  • Experience writing advanced PowerShell scripts for workflow automation
  • Experience in higher education environment
  • Demonstrated experience in supporting institutional efforts to create a diverse and inclusive community

Conditions Of Appointment

Occasional early morning, evening, or weekend hours are required for upgrades, maintenance, and troubleshooting. 

Position is a full-time Academic Staff appointment.  Official transcripts of the highest degree achieved will be required of finalist(s). A criminal conviction investigation will be conducted on the finalist(s). Salary range of $65,000 - $73,000. 

This position is exempt from the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).

The UW System provides an excellent benefits package, including participation in the Wisconsin State Retirement System.
