Essential Job Functions

This position reports to the Manager of Network and Infrastructure and part of a network team responsible for the design, implementation, monitoring, and maintenance of the University’s multi-campus wide ethernet data network and its interface to the State data networks and the Internet. This position requires expertise in a wide range of network technologies and security, including the deployment of firewalls, intrusion detection and prevention systems, security appliances and gateways, servers, storage, and network-based services. Primary duties will include maintenance, protection, and recovery of computer networks, hardware, software, and related systems; In addition, the position works closely with the end users to identify and resolve any issues.

This position includes the following responsibilities:

  • Design and maintain plans for both the University and the Residence Life data network backbones, including edge switches, building concentrators, core network switch equipment, firewalls, network security devices, wireless access points, wireless controllers, and routers.
  • Maintain and administer computer networks and related computing environments including systems software, applications software, hardware, and configurations.
  • Protect data, software, and hardware by coordinating, planning and implementing network security measures, in collaboration with the IT Security Officer.
  • Diagnose and resolve hardware, software, and other network and system problems including replacing faulty network hardware components when required.
  • Monitor network performance.
  • Document procedures for mission critical installations and repairs.
  • Install of hardware, firmware, and management software for network equipment.
  • Monitor network device logs for indications of virus infections, excessive bandwidth consumption, and security intrusions. Notify ITSO of any intrusions and assist to remediate identified issues.
  • Monitor connections to and coordinate upgrades with the UW-System data network.
  • Monitor connections to and coordinate upgrades with the UW-System data network.
  • Install, configure and test new releases of firewall software and related products.
  • Implement changes and maintain firewall security rules to enhance security and enable needed server and/or workstation functionality as the server and network environment changes.
  • Monitor firewall flows and logs to determine enhancements and improvements in firewall settings to optimize network security, and to identify virus or malware infected workstations.
  • Notify IT Security Officer of any security related issues regarding the firewalls.
  • Serve as a member of the Information Technology security incident response team.
  • Assist in monitoring the security environment of the university network and help in responding to information security incidents.
  • Assist in the development of procedures regarding information technology security.
  • Participate in professional development to maintain proficiency with network technologies.



  • Associates degree at time of application
  • 1 year of network administration experience
  • Strong understanding of network infrastructure and network hardware
  • Demonstrated ability to implement, administer, and troubleshoot network infrastructure devices, including wireless access points, firewall, routers, switches, and/or controllers
  • Working knowledge of application transport, network infrastructure protocols, quality of service, network implementation concepts, and TCP/IP V4 and V6 protocols
  • Demonstrated ability to create accurate network diagrams and documentation, and provide detailed information for hardware and software selection


  • Bachelor's degree in computer science or related field
  • Three years of network administration experience
  • Experience working in a higher education IT environment
  • Experience working with HPE/Aruba Procurve and Comware switches and wireless controllers and access points
  • Competence in the design, implementation, and/or administration of an enterprise ethernet network with over 1,000 clients spread across multiple buildings and geographic locations
  • Competence in the design, implementation and/or administration of an enterprise wireless environments with over 500 access points in a mix of corporate and BYOD devices, utilizing 802.1x and high-density deployment scenarios
  • Experience in implementing and utilizing network management utilities to monitor network performance, transmission errors, latency, jitter, and utilization
  • Possess knowledge and/or experience with network management skills using SNMP, RMON, SFLOW, and Netflow based technologies
  • Knowledge of network security intrusion detection methods, tools, techniques, policies, and practices
  • Familiar with PCI-DSS networking security, scoping and segmentation
  • Experience with network troubleshooting with use of packet capture analysis
  • Multi-site BGP deployment experience
  • Knowledge and/or extensive work experience with the design and implementation of 802.11 wireless networks
  • Network certifications

Conditions of Appointment

This position will require occasional travel to multiple organizational sites and may require additional travel for meetings. Occasional off-hours work as assigned by the supervisor.

Position is a full-time Academic Staff appointment.  Official transcripts of the highest degree achieved will be required of finalist(s). A criminal conviction investigation will be conducted on the finalist(s). Salary range of $60,000-$65,000.

This position is exempt from the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).
