Essential Job Functions

The Residential Education Coordinator reports to the Associate Director; and assumes additional responsibilities assigned by and makes recommendations to the Director. The Residential Education Coordinator (REC) position assists in carrying out the mission and philosophy of Housing and Residential Education.  Housing and Residential Education provides housing for 2,000 students during the academic year and 2,500 guests during the summer.  The REC is responsible for overseeing a community of approximately 400 residents; and with the help of Resident Assistants (RAs), strives to develop and maintain a safe, enjoyable, supportive and inclusive living environment for residents where they can achieve academic success and personal growth and development.  The REC is a member of the Residence Life team and holds administrative responsibilities, participates in committees and meetings, and serves students in a multitude of ways. 

This position includes the following responsibilities:

  • Shares in the responsibility for recruiting, selecting, training, supervising and evaluating resident assistants (RAs) and community advisors (CAs).
  • Directly supervises and evaluates RAs and CAs in assigned area; and assists in the indirect supervision and mentoring of RAs and CAs in other areas.
  • Develops and facilitates weekly area staff meetings to coordinate information sharing and program coordination; as well as one-to-one meetings with RAs and CAs.
  • Organizes and implements team building activities and staff development.
  • Oversees all aspects of RA duty in assigned area including scheduling, enforcing protocol, providing feedback, and monitoring incident reports and work orders.
  • Collaborates with other staff to develop and present training to student staff.
  • Has thorough knowledge of the university and departmental mission, goals and philosophies and works within them to inspire student success.
  • Works with Housing and Residential Education business operations staff on a variety of matters including room assignments and changes, budgetary expenditures, RA/CA hiring and payroll, and desk and mailroom services.
  • Works with Housing and Residential Education facilities management staff on a variety of matters including building cleanliness, student safety and security, and student accountability for damages and repairs.
  • Completes weekly walk-throughs of buildings and office/lounge hours in assigned area.
  • Works with Housing and Residential Education administrative staff, University Police and Dean of Students to ensure a prompt and supportive response to student crises and emergencies.
  • Meets with students on a variety of issues including roommate disputes, academic concerns, and mental health concerns.  Refers and documents accordingly.
  • Assists with management of student misconduct, including writing incident reports, overseeing RA enforcement of policies and RA documentation, meeting with students, and following up on incidents.
  • Assists with Housing and Residential Education summer camp and conference operations and services.
  • Prepares administrative reports and formal presentations.
  • Advises individual students, student leadership groups and conference delegations.
  • Participates in weekly membership and executive board meetings of the groups being advised.  Advises and mentors the executive board members.
  • Creates opportunities for residents to develop leadership skills; and encourages resident involvement in established leadership groups.
  • Ensures a residential community conducive to sleeping, academic study, personal responsibility and safety.
  • Provides academic support and personal development programming and mentoring, and promotes student awareness of campus resources.
  • Provides community development activities and actively promotes campus sponsored activities.
  • Assists residents and staff in the development and maintenance of behavioral community standards appropriate to group living.
  • Actively assesses the sense of community within the residential facilities, and creates and implements training, programs and activities appropriate for the ever-changing needs of the students.
  • Ensures that all university policies are appropriately enforced.
  • The live-in nature of the REC position requires the REC to be present during the work day, and while serving on duty during the evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  • Rotates on-duty 365 days per year and responds to a variety of matters including serious incidents of student misconduct, student crises, and facilities-related emergencies.
  • Attends evening and weekend events related to REC responsibilities, meetings, projects and committee assignments.
  • Assists the Dean of Students Office with student conduct projects and trainings.  Facilitates meetings with students in crisis or within the conduct system.
  • Takes an active leadership role on Student Affairs and departmental committees.
  • Makes recommendations to the Director and Associate Director on matters related to residence life; and to the Director and Associate Director on matters related to summer guest operations.


  • Master's degree in Higher Education Administration, Counseling, or related field at time of application 
  • Graduate level or full-time professional live-in, housing experience 

  • Knowledge in student development theory, issues, and trends 
  • Experience in student staff supervision, student advising, community development, educational programming, and/or student leadership development

Conditions Of Appointment

This position requires on-campus residency and compliance with on-campus rules and regulations. It also requires a varying schedule and workload over 40 hours per week, including on-duty responsibilities (on a rotating basis) during the evenings, weekends, and holidays. Occasional training, meetings, and programmatic responsibilities on weekends, especially during crucial times of the year, should be expected. This position includes occasional travel for student development, leadership development, and professional responsibilities and development.

Position is a full-time Academic Staff appointment. Official transcripts of the highest degree achieved will be required of finalist(s). A criminal conviction investigation will be conducted on the finalist(s). Salary of $38,000.

This position is exempt from the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).

The UW System provides an excellent benefits package to meet the diverse needs of its employees.  This includes several health insurance options, with annual deductibles as low as $250/individual and $500/family. Our benefits package also includes dental, vision, several life insurance options, AD&D and Accident insurance and Flexible Spending and Health Savings Accounts.  We participate in the Wisconsin Retirement System (WRS), where employer contributions begin immediately and employees are fully vested after 5 years of service.  The UW System also provides supplemental retirement savings programs including a 403(b) and Deferred Compensation.

In addition, employees receive several types of paid leave benefits, which are prorated for employees working less than 100%.  This includes 9 legal holidays, 36 hours of personal holiday and between 96-130 hours of sick leave annually.  Employees earn 13-27 days of vacation each year, depending on years of service and employment type.
